    Gauge Tolerance

I'm measuring a set of strings on a P Bass that I would like to keep exactly the same because of the setup, and I only suspect that they are stock 7250s of some sort. My caliper is measuring roughly 42-62-82-102.5, which is right between 7250L and 7250M. I understand that at the time this was...

Tell me you're old without telling me you're old

I had one of those Capris too when I first moved to LA. The TR7 replaced it actually. I think it was an iron 4 but not sure. The gas gauge didn't work (bought it used) and I had to be really good at watching mileage so I'd know when to fill it up. It had manual transmission and was pretty...

    Cab weight

...we paid attention to the phrase "money talks, bullsh-t walks". Also, the grilles are a significant part of the weight, they are a heavy gauge cold rolled steel grille. This too addresses the needs of the pro touring and gigging world over the long haul. We could have saved a couple of pounds...

Trying to find a low tension but old school sounding flat

For me the tension and resulting percussiveness of old school flats is integral to their old school sound. If low tension and old school sound were equally important I’d probably get medium gauge EB Pino flats and give them 6 months to see how close they get.

Tell me you're old without telling me you're old

Yes, that looks about right. I think they had two models, the 2000 which was a 4 and the 2600 which was V6. It was a lively, good handling car, with the 4 speed manual. Bodies German-made with Canadian engines. I only had one problem with it in about 4 years of ownership. Got in one day...

    Bright J bass pickups

OK, J bass pickups. Most of them are made with the same magnet type (alnico V), and the same wire gauge. The thing that determines how bright a pickup is is the inductance (less inductance means brighter), and when you have the same magnets, and the same wire gauge, this is one place where the...

Tell me you're old without telling me you're old

I had a lot of cars with one or more of manual choke, high beam foot switch, directly plumbed oil pressure and water temp gauges and cable driven tachs and speedometers. Some got updated as they were rebuilt. Some not.

Clicking with my La Bella Low Tension Flats

When it comes to flats, I find smaller gauges for A and E actually balance better tonally with G and D. I particularly like .095 for E as it tends to have better definition and clarity than anything too thick. I use three different brands of flats, ie GHS Precision Flats 45-95, Ernie Ball...

Dunlop flats compared to Rotosound Jazz flats in terms of tension

...to try this set, make sure you lower the action at the saddles as well. The high tension should accommodate this, and it'll make the strings much more comfortable to play. In comparison, the 105-45 Dunlop set is much lower. To me they feel about the same tension-wise as rounds in the same gauge.

The "Official" MTD (non-US made) Club Part 3

I like the way you think... I'd say it would be possible; the double MM route would get rid of the bridge route completely(gauging from a pic), and I'd just make a simple pickguard to cover the neck route.

Trying to find a low tension but old school sounding flat

...P Bass: 760FX StingRay: LTF Jazz Bass: Chromes or Jazz Flats Most authentic old-school tone overall: La Bella The big thing is that I wouldn’t choose between LTF and 760FX based purely on tension or gauge. The core construction, attack, midrange, and the bass itself matter just as much.

Dunlop flats compared to Rotosound Jazz flats in terms of tension

Rotosound 77s are high tension for their gauges, not unmanageably so but definitely feel different (and benefit from a setup). They're slightly lower output and may benefit from raising pickups, too.

My Fender James Jamerson Precision , Intonation issue.

...the E ring out and it chokes the G string. I use foam under the strings on my other P bass (it has no ashtray) and first of all I have regular gauge strings on it that don't require such an extreme slant in the saddles, but I've cut the foam block (kitchen sponge) so it's taller on the bass...

My Fender James Jamerson Precision , Intonation issue.

I'll just repeat my suggestion because it's the only way to have the muting effect without intonation issues regardless of the string gauge: Angle the foam strip so it follows the angle of the saddles, and place it so it touches the strings just ahead of the saddles. I promise this will either...

    Gauge Tolerance

Update: 7250M was right. I tried some D'Addarios I had on hand in the lower gauge, and the 80 gave a lot of fret buzz - less tension. I went out and got some 7250Ms and it's all gone. Low E in the new set measured 102.5, also.

Dunlop flats compared to Rotosound Jazz flats in terms of tension

Rotosound flats are stiff. I hated them. The fact that Steve Harris plays them in heavy gauge at his age is wild to me. Dunlops are on the lower side of tension to me. Chromes, Fenders, GHS, are all a bit stiffer. I think Slinky flats are in the same range as Dunlops but its been a while since...

Dunlop flats compared to Rotosound Jazz flats in terms of tension

...for it. Before the Dunlop, I had Fender 9050M on that Pbass; they were not crazy stiff nor had they a tremendous amount of tension (for their gauge) but you could feel the fretting hand fatigue after the session. I removed them because I was not so happy with the D and G strings that...

Dunlop flats compared to Rotosound Jazz flats in terms of tension

I use both the RS77LE (50-110) and the Dunlop DBFS50110 sets. They are basically the same gauge. I like thick strings and high action (you can look up some pics of my action ha) and I play fairly hard. The 77LE has been my "go to " set since the 80s. However, they're not right for every bass I...

Agreed. I find it liberating to get rid of things. Takes it off my mind. I've bought/sold on all three and also TB. I've never had a bad transaction, although I do a little screening before someone comes to my house. I can usually get the feel of someone's interest by asking a few...

...sound like what they are…interesting flats. If you haven't tried the Cobalt flats, yet, and are interested, I could send you a used .100-gauge set for the price of the shipping. I have plenty of other types and brands that still need to be sampled, so it's not like I'm hurting for strings. ;)

They can be, but only the first time when positioning for intonation. Once positioned, ithey’re set. Unless one does a drastic string gauge change, at least in my experience.

    Gauge Tolerance

That's a tough call as it could go either way depending on the manufacturer. Based on the actual gauges of 42-62-82-102.5, I would go with the 45-105 set, ie 7250M.

Double Bass Increase (acoustic) volume of double bass

Thanks a lot! Could I ask some clarification: 2. The endpin-side of my tailpiece is already as low as can be. So creating more back length can only be achieved by a shorter tailpiece.
