In all honesty I think the answer is more dependent on if you're getting a versatile "great bass". In my opinion, you already have the basses which cover all of your bases.....;) The music man seems to me to be really good at the one tone, but not as useful with others. You may long for a tone...

The sperzel bass tuners have a rounded pin that, when you turn the thumb wheel, pushes against the string holding it in place with friction against the inside top of the key. It doesn't really kink it, just holds it in place. Does that answer your question (I'm not certain I understood)? I do...

You are absolutely right, I did have that key in the bass, and it did fit. I'm sure it would have worked just fine, I was just not impressed with the build quality of the keys. The sperzel is in there and is actually quite nice. Thanks for the advice on string install, a locking tie is the way...

That's awesome you suggest them, I actually found those at a local shop. They were so close, but the shaft is split and the gear worm won't fit the original keys other parts. I was concerned the string would slip off as the orientation doesn't hold the string down. Thanks for your research.

Thanks jazz. I actually ordered a used set after scouring the infernet for a good deal. They are pretty sweet. I did just end up replacing the broken a string key and leaving the rest (it doesn't fit perfectly, but a couple of washers hold it nice and snug). The sperzels are as far as I can...
