    Sacrificial ESP/LTD defretted

Went ahead and pulled the nut, which I would imagine needs to lowered. Thinking lower the nut height by the same amount as the height of the old frets? Thanks!

    Sacrificial ESP/LTD defretted

Thanks for confirming about the nut removal, did see how I could possibly get a proper sanding job done with the nut in place. As for the chips, very tiny and would have been difficult to work around so decided to simply scrape off and move on. I may regret doing that, knowledge gained for next...

    Sacrificial ESP/LTD defretted

As the title suggests, the "frettin' be gone now" so now comes the fun part of planning the next steps, how to do them and what to expect in the way of issues. Do know that I have to file the nut, but will wait until the fretboard is sanded so I can get a few measurements to know how much needs...

Conflicted: talk me out of a new bass.

I was really impressed with the Yamaha BBP35, but was already hooked on Ibanez by the time I looked at Yamaha, still dig the hell outta their bikes!

Conflicted: talk me out of a new bass.

Interesting, I have 6, two that don't get played much. Hence the defret on the ESP/LTD, once Fretless, I'll find reasons to play it LOL The other lonely Bass is a Hofner "Beatle Bass." As soon as I figure out a solution to the balance on the Hofner, I'll find reasons to play it too! But first...

    Defretting ?

Another great choice is ground wounds or even pressure wounds. Both start as round wounds and both have very unique tonal characteristics.

Conflicted: talk me out of a new bass.

I have an 86 Roadmaster II 851, also have 96 AS400, and a 21 Mezzo all by Ibanez. Get a few more Ibanez's LOL and you'll be happier :D

First of the next set of questions, where to get the veneers? Looking for something in the natural oak or ash color, or is there a better hardwood light color?

    Sacrificial LTD

The deed is done, now for the fun part of it, cleaning up the "slots", inserting the contrasting veneer, shaping same, and sanding the neck. Many thanks to all, but especially stephaniw80401 Snert gebass6 Be prepared for more questions you three! Possum Willy

Thanks for answering, By thin, do you mean on top of the fretboard, or in the fretboard?

    Sacrificial LTD

Question about doing this conversion; How do I go about adding lines where the frets were? I'm working on not looking at the fretboard as I play, but it comes in handy when I'm working through a new or complex piece of music. Thanks!

Hope you don't mind the 1001 questions that will ensue LMAO! This is, obviously, a labor of love, meaning, "Step by step One goes Far" and I have so many projects that are already burning slowly on the grille of life. This project will be "bit by bit, one goes far" please stay in contact on a...

To answer the questions first asked, yes and yes. Starting with 600 grit wet sanding paper then going with 000 steel wool to get the satin finish I love so much, but not on the body, only the neck. Still quite a lot of work... Read the rest of your reply (all puns intended) and you answered how...

WOW, just the Bunny hopping all over his ESP/LTD, wish I had his pedigree, then I could afford "non junkers" but alas, I digress. More than anything, I want this to be my Bass, I do all of my own work on them, BUT I know when I'm out of my wheelhouse too. So a really good luthier in the west...

String set recommendation for Ibanez Mezzo (32" scale)?

So let's do a Mezzo club!

    Sacrificial LTD

Hey guys, been busy playing, but came across one of my "lost" bass guitars, an LTD Jazz. Last year, was thinking about buying a Fretless, but with the re-discovery of this guitar, I think I'd rather have a luthier take a look at it, as it always had a wonderful sound. Any ideas of cost for such...

String set recommendation for Ibanez Mezzo (32" scale)?

Plenty of differing types of strings you can use on the Mezzo, as opposed to really short scale (30 inch and under) basses. There's a Jazz set by Thomastik specifically made for 32 inch and it's light gauge, not cheap, but sound beautiful and almost no finger noise. At least we don't have to...

Cheap Fretless or build my own neck?

To qualify my comments on the Beatle Bass, I bought the cheaper Hofner. Beautifully made body and neck, even the electronics aren't horrible. The balance is the only thing that bumps me out. One evening, after finishing other guitar projects, I'll sit down and work on the balance issue again...
  34. Possum Willy

Cheap Fretless or build my own neck?

Well, the neck is solid and the body small and hollow. I've seen several photos of Paul playing his Bass with more than a few different types of straps. I don't think he ever solved the balance either.
  35. Possum Willy

Cheap Fretless or build my own neck?

Ever had a Beatle Bass? They have horrible balance. I'm still trying to find a strap that will keep the machine head pointing up when I let go of the neck.
  36. Possum Willy

    Pressure Wound vs. Ground Wound

Or simply go the the GHS site, that way you can get the sized strings you want. You can even get singles and set up the sizing yourself. Do wish GHS made a .040 1st string for Bass on the ground wounds. I like a rather light set on my guitars, just sounds better to me.
  37. Possum Willy

Cheap Fretless or build my own neck?

I gotta admit, it has a nice sound to it!
  38. Possum Willy

Cheap Fretless or build my own neck?

I couldn't agree more! Besides, as long as the body and neck are of good build, I can always change out the electrics, tuners and bridge. Harley Benton, eh? I'll check that out!
