    Fender Performer Build

BassHappy, Just cruising by and thought I would see how the Transformer is working out for you now that it has some miles on it. Nothing to report yet on the hot rod. Hope all is well on your end!

I will be happy to comment on the bridge at that time. You are correct, the only pup still in its original position is the bridge. A comparison between bridge pups is possible, but the mass of the body has also changed with some additional routing. Anyway, I will do a comparison in 25 words...

    Fender Performer Build

Excellent review Rick, and one very nice looking bass. I am smiling while typing this because your bass is making me happy. How odd is that. I have totally enjoyed watching this progress through the final product. Enjoy the heck out of it! And congrats!

    Fender Performer Build

Yeah, a skinny 2.1" at the heel. Funny, I am so used to Performers that even though I use a Precision or Jazz more often, I switch between the three without issue.

    Fender Performer Build

Looking forward to the pics, and the new bridge. Regarding the pups, on my hot rod I moved the neck pup way forward, but the bridge pup remains in its original position. I wanted to pull more bass out. This is cool! Looking forward to Keith's pics! Steve

    Very first set of flats?

linnin, I took your advice and have GHS on three or four basses, and they are very nice, but honestly, I don't hear that much difference between them, the Chromes and the Fenders. Truth, I like the Labellas best, for feel and sound. You know how many strings I have to buy, and that extra...

I also use Chromes a lot as a general purpose flat wound.

    Fender Performer Bass Modification

One more modification is being made. If you have been following the Performer Build by member BassHappy (above) you know that he is going with a high mass bridge, mounted to an aluminum block routed into the body. I am kind of excited to see how this turns out. I learned that there was a...

    TELECASTER/51-56 P BASS CLUB

Hey Tele guys and gals. I am looking for a Blue Flower 68 to match up with my Pink Paisley. Have only located three, and none have been for sale. Anyone here know where one is hiding? I am willing to stand tall for one in good condition.

Fender "A" neck P bass history question

Someday I will remember to post the pic the first time... This is the 63P/J. The neck is original, the body (wood) is original, the rest is pretty much refin/repro, but a great gigging bass. Lindy Fralin vintage pup. As parts become available, this will become more period correct. It is #3...

Fender "A" neck P bass history question

I am researching this as I don't know the complete answer. I know bassists started swapping necks from the beginning. I have a 63P with a 63J neck on it. It is an interesting question, let's see what pops up.

The more I look at that bridge the more I wonder if it was carved out of a tank. That is a nice piece of metal tubing, looks even thicker that specified. Wish I could test it out with the aluminum mounting block. Sounds like a solid idea...pun intended. Happy New Year!

Flats sounds good for rock genre?

Funny, you sound just like me. I started with flats on one P and soon had them on all precisions, but kept rounds on my jazzes. Now, I have flats on all my jazzes too, except for one that just sounds too good to mess with. I also play P 80% of the time.

    Fender Performer Build

Looking good! I thought it was a two burst at first also. It is subtle enough to really be cool, not a bright, in your face, red. Looks like it is coming together. I have really enjoyed checking in and watching (and learning) as the bass progressed, and I am really looking forward to seeing...

Are the sidemarks on or between the frets? I think I have to go back before 2005 to find them on the frets, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

    Fender Performer Bass Modification

Thanks for joining the thread Jeff. I thought it would be much easier if everyone got the details directly from the horses mouth, so to speak. Just played a 50 minute set on the bass, playing with pickup and tone options...there is no end. Nice job!

    Fender Performer Bass Modification

The pickups were cleaned up, but the pups in the final picture are not the ones in the early pictures. If you look at the CGM Performer, you will see it now has two aged pups that don't match the knobs. Those white pups are now in my new bass. (I will swap those knobs on the CGM for some more...

    Fender Performer Bass Modification

I did find a picture of the initial routing, so I attached it here. Still have not located the pic of the man in action. That was about the end of the process. I picked out some really nice pups and knobs to use, and Jeff put on some new Chrome flats and set it up before bringing it over and...

    Fender Performer Bass Modification

Except for the third pup, all new electronics were used, and the original parts went into my parts locker to use as replacements. Being of simple mind, and wanting to avoid active electronics, we used three mini switches to positively turn on or off each pup, volume control for each pup, and...

    Fender Performer Bass Modification

Jeff still had to remove some wood, and I have a great pic of him in his respirator, hard at it, but darned if I can find it. He also added a little wood under the middle pup to screw in to. So the damage was kept to an absolute minimum - just routing for the moved and new pup, and a little...

    Fender Performer Bass Modification

Okay, so now it was time to lay out the controls. I wanted to run the controls in a slow arc, following the lower edge of the PG, pot, switch, pot, switch, etc. I still think that would have looked nicer and played a little more intuitively, but it would have removed too much wood, to the...

    Fender Performer Bass Modification

Next we worked on the electronics. We used the old pickguard as a template. I wanted the neck pup moved north, and we played with that. At first I wanted the middle pup to be close to the neck pup as I like more bass, but aesthetically it needed to be midway, and that gave me more variations...

    Fender Performer Bass Modification

Since this was just a modification, not a build, there was not as much to do. My tech and friend Jeff (bradentonguitartech.com) did the work as a fill in over the past few months. Of the two parts basses, I chose the nicest body, a lime green refin that actually photographs close to Candy...

    Fender Performer Bass Modification

Any other bass players immune to bass acquisition syndrome?

I made a pledge to stop gassing when I counted 20 basses in my collection. I had gotten a bit carried away, I mean, you can only play one. When I hit 30 basses I just shook my head. When is the madness going to stop? I broke down and called 1-800-STOP-THE-GAS. It didn't work.
