Tung's new monster Prat Contrabass Guitar

Five-year update! This photo was at the point of installing hardware and adding a nut. It was finished in 2016 and have been using it regularly, especially for gigs requiring reading music. It works well as it is not necessary to shift positions much to play anything written.

hover, you know what's funny? I see your photo with that Fender, and I'm thinking, "damn.. I need to get one of those!".. I used to have a Jazz Bass but had to sell it when times were hard. Someday I'll get a Fender yet.

Mantises don't play basses too often since their main purpose is for human surveillance on behalf of the greys. o_O

Well, the way I see it, the lowest notes are at the first position, where it's not so wide. And when you get up high on the fingerboard, you simply will not be able to get to the low strings easily, but they should not be needed often up there. It's a bit of a compromise, and frankly I don't...

I think it's really 17.5mm spacing, but that's not center-to-center but is rather the space between the strings. And no peanut butter is involved for real, but it will be tasty!

    Acoustic, fretted, upright bass guitar?

Check out this link: http://dennishavlena.com/acoustic.htm I would consider finding a local acoustic guitar luthier and inquire about making a large acoustic bass guitar.

Tru-Oil, Tung Oil, or MinWax Wipe-On Poly?

I am, of course, partial to tung oil. But I would certainly use some kind of polyurethane if you want something that will protect a bit from minor dings and scratches.

So here are a couple of shots of woods. The top is buckeye burl. I've chosen the darker one (wenge fingerboard) but it's not set in stone. The lighter one is padauk. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Some folks question whether a full-range instrument like this (12-strings) is still a bass. That's a tough question. When we say "bass", aren't we really just saying a short name for bass guitar? Leo Fender designed the Precision with 4 strings, as on an acoustic upright bass. It could just as...

Yes, peanut butter. See, first it's hydrolized, using a silver nitrite solution, and then cauterized briefly in a 550 degree oven. The result is a beautiful finish that smells nice and gives you a little extra energy! :hyper: Of course, in reality, it's gonna be a lacquer finish!

A grand piano has 88 keys, 88 different notes. My new instrument will have 84 different notes, will have a lower range than a piano, but will not go as high. woods involved: wenge, padauk, maple, buckeye burl, maybe swamp ash headless

    The Science of Pickup Positioning?

I had one of those basses! It was a Westone "The Rail". I thought it was a fantastic idea, but the bass just didn't have the tone or sustain that you would get in a decent bass (like my Fender Jazz with a Badass II bridge). As for the pickup itself, I was hoping the attached knob would make the...

Hi! I'm Tung, musician from St. Louis. I'm having a new bass built by Prat Basses. This will be my second custom bass; the first was my Fodera Anthony Jackson Contrabass Guitar which I ordered in 1988, so here we are, over 25 years later!! More details to follow! :bassist:
