Details

This is a 1965 Kay M1, serial #51136. This ¾ double bass probably started life as a school instrument as it has some black paint on the headstock. It was refinished and rebuilt by a guitar luthier in Rochester, NY. The original finish was removed and replaced with an oil varnish. The neck was never broken but I dropped the bass once and loosened the glue in the neck joint, causing the neck to loosen. The joint was completely repaired by Mark Carlsen of Tewksbury, Massachusetts. He also planed the fingerboard bevel, enhanced the overstand, cut a new bridge, replaced the tailgut wire with a braided metal cable, and replaced the endpin. This bass currently wears spirocore weichs, has leather bumpers on the treble side. and is completely healthy. I know everyone with one of these says this, but this is the greatest sounding Kays I have ever heard; powerful, loud, punchy…all of the great things that you want in a bass. (Sorry, the pickup is not included in the sale but it does have a case and a bib.)
