Here is a 1967 Baldwin 704 hollow body bass in great shape. The bass is all original (missing pickguard) with a really nice Road Runner aftermarket hard case, with the key.
Baldwin basses were made in England and Italy between 1967-1970. This one is from Italy, see the serial number plate in the pictures, serial number 1007. The bass is clean and plays really easily and has that warm old-school thump. Now strung with flats, and it was perfect for a Woodstock Anniversary gig last year. It really nails that Jefferson Airplane sound. It gets a lot of positive feedback from the audience at shows, it draws a lot of attention. People often think it's a Gretsch or an old Gibson.
Baldwin in the 1960's, like other piano and organ manufacturers were losing market share to the guitar makers, thanks to The Beatles and others driving guitar sales at the time. Baldwin and Burns went into the guitar and bass market together and although they made some fine instruments, it only lasted a few short years. Burns went away completely and Baldwin went back to keyboards again. Burns eventually came back recently, but the quality of the instruments is not the same.
The neck is maple with a rosewood fingerboard, 21 frets including a zero fret, fully bound. Original Van Ghent chrome tuners in nice shape. 30" short scale.
The body is in nice shape, minor checking, some finish cracks but not down to the wood, some light dings, including one on upper bout on the side, not visible from the front. No buckle rash, fully bound in white on neck and body. Nice glossy finish. This guitar has been well maintained for its entire life. We should all look so nice at 53 years old!
The electronics are all original with Baldwin chrome covered pickups, chrome knobs, pickup select toggle. The neck pickup sometimes cuts out but the bass plays fine and sounds wonderful. It may just be the jack. The price is adjusted to account for this.
