For Sale 1973 Mathias Thoma for Sale!

Discussion in 'For Sale: Double Basses' started by KevinSchmidt, Mar 27, 2013.

  1. I bought this bass 4 years ago from David Gage in NYC, it was marketed as "Juzek-Type." It makes a great conservatory-level bass for any type of player, definitely has potential to be a great jazz bass too.

It was made in West Germany in 1973, and refurbished by David Gage's shop. Nice thick fingerboard, good bridge. There were no cracks during my tenure with it.

It is currently strung with Original Flatchrom GDA and a Flexocor E. I have a pair of Evah's, Bel Cantos, or Kaplans that I could put on if requested. It also comes with a Mooradian case, free of charge.

    I'm asking for $8,000 OBO.

    String Length: 42"
    Upper Bout: 19"
    Lower Bout: 25"
    Rib Depth: 8.5"

Were Mathias Thoma basses a lot different back in 73? My impression is that the current basses are basically inexpensive Romanians that are assembled there and "finished off" here in NY. Basically, a student grade bass. Back in 73, was it different? OR am I wrong about the current basses?

  19. The bass is still for sale! I'm not well versed in their history, but this one was made in West Germany :)

  20. I'm not in the market, but I'm wondering why you describe it as having been made in 1973. To me, it looks older.
