Serial # B0155XX, which I think dates it to 1984. Early version of Leo's redesigned headstock.
Great shape with some actual finish wear on the top of the body (not artificial relic). The finish is a cool satin tobacco burst, but the pics don't really do it justice.
This bass has THE nicest neck of any G&L I have every played. Frets are in great shape - it spent its whole life with flatwound strings until it came to me. It currently has pressure-wound strings. It weights a solid 9.8 lbs on the bathroom scale. Recent setup at South Austin Music.
A little back story. Back in the 90s when I was playing bass professionally in NYC, my main instrument was a mid-80s G&L L-1000. It had a MONSTER tone, especially set to the OMG setting, and I loved it. Whenever I used different basses at our gigs, my bandmates would tell me what I heard with my own ears: the other basses just didn't produce the fullness that the G&L produced. Then, in 2000 I sold all my bass gear, including that bass... And I regretted it for years and years. I said to myself, if I ever found another G&L that played and sounded like my old axe, I would scoop it up. So, when I found this one, I scooped it up. However, after much honest reflection, I have to admit to myself that I am not playing this bass as much as I should. Times change, people change, life moves on, and I have just accumulated too many instruments (you know the drill). So, with some mixed emotions I am letting this one go. Come get it - you will love it!
