Decided to put my Smith on the market. It's a great bass but it doesn't get the use it deserves and there's something else I'm looking at so time to move this one along.
It's a 1998 Ken Smith BSR5P, core is mahogany, facings are figured maple. Electronics are stock, as is the bridge. Tuners are not original but are pretty new and work great.
The good: this bass plays great and sounds fantastic. It has such a smooth tone, very even volume even when slapping. A little growly but sits really well in a mix. The pre and pups are totally stock. The maple has very interesting figure on the body, and the 3 piece maple neck has figured maple on the outer pieces. It comes with the SKB hardshell case. The truss rod is fully functional. It balances really well on a strap.
The bad: cosmetics. This is an older bass and it has been played. There are snall divots in the top next to the pickups, and a worn spot around the volume knob. There is a big ding in the side and some others on the back, and clip tuner rub marks on the matching headstock face. I took pics of the major marks. Most you can't see from a few feet away. The center detents on the blend and EQ (3-band) knobs are not crisp any more. You can feel where they are but the knobs don't click in at the detent point anymore. They function as they should and are not scratchy. Ive got the knobs on so when the lines point away from the strings at 90° the controls are centered.
The cosmetic wear is why I bought this specific Smith. I didn't want a super clean bass I'd be afraid to take put and gig with. Functionality this bass is great, it's just been well uses over the past 25 years. The frets are in great condition, I don't know if they're stainless? Or if they've been leveled? I haven't had them worked on and there's a lot of meat on them.
The spacing on this one is 18mm and the weight is 9.4 lbs.
