For sale, a 20th Anniversary Stingray 5, predictably built in 2007 with a top that was selected especially for me. It’s the most beautiful 20th I’ve ever seen. Other than the fancy top, it’s a perfectly glorious Stingray 5 and will thump until those proverbial bovines return to their homes. This was before the pickup change, so it’s a ceramic pickup vs alnico, guaranteeing you the classic and authentic Stingray 5 tone, in case you’re concerned about such details. It also comes with a rather fancy case, one of those old G&G models, I think, and not one of those high-impact plastic cases that come with every other Music Man bass.
It has one flaw and that’s why the price is so very reasonable. On the top side around the body end of the neck, the veneer has lifted a bit. It’s hard to see and even harder to photograph but you can feel it. I could have it fixed but let’s be honest, I’m not going to have it fixed, am I. It’s not something I can do myself. So you get a deal, a really GREAT deal, and you can either have it repaired or do what I’ve done, which is just live with it. (I caused this myself by leaving it hanging where the AC hit it right in that spot. Doh.) My loss, as they say, is your gain.
Functionally, it’s in perfect shape. I do not baby my basses – I play them – so this one has seen a few gigs, although not many because it was just too pretty for this lunchpail bassist. A friend of mine came to a gig one night and said it was the best “played with a pick” tone he’d ever heard. I’m not going to argue with him. Sounds pretty bad-ass fingerstyle, too. Anyway, no big dings or scratches or any of that. Bass weighs pretty much exactly 10 pounds so not a lightweight but not an anchor, either.
It’s been strung with TI Flats since day one, so there’s no fret wear. And they still sound great. Or I can slap some Slinkys on there for you if you like all that zingy business.
Since all the shipping companies have gone insane, add about 100 bucks for the continental US. I won’t ship international. I guess I will entertain trades but I can’t think of anything I really need or want right now, unless it’s a pretty kick-ass acoustic guitar (6 string).
*I have tried to photograph the finish issue but it’s just slightly higher than the rest of the finish and has escaped me so far. If you’re seriously interested, I’ll try again, but not if you’re just kicking the tires.
