With stock tubes, is the pre-amp noisy just with overdrive or even when clean.
Understood that this has been a common problem with these.
Ironic that the SVP-CL and SVT IIP are really quiet.

I've received several inquiries regarding the functionality and the sound of the preamp. Specifically regarding the 'noisy' comments I made in the original post and in a reply I made. Also, it's overall funtionality.
The preamp is fully functional and it sounds great. It was part of my rig for quite a while. Most recently it’s been used for bass pedals in the prog band I play with. I plug it into a Crown xls 1002 power amp and it's been great for live shows. The DI sounds sounds great as well.
It’s not noisy. With the stock tube there was a bit of ‘tube amp’ hum. A known issue with the SVP Pro. By swapping the V5 tube the hum along with the overall output (Preamp out) level is reduced.
My little trick of putting the EQ pedal in the effects loop allows me to drive the power amp a little harder. Also, when I use the EQ pedal I actually engage the -15db pad on the preamp itself.
Without the EQ pedal in the loop and the -15bd switched off its about the same volume. I like the EQ pedal because you can tweek the EQ based on the sound in the room.

I have one of these that's a little noisy. I narrowed it down to coming from V5 (Master Volume Tube). Another solution for any hum is to get a XLR to 1/4 in cable and use the DI out as your main output to power amp. The DI is transformer isolated, bypasses V5, and the DI out level knob becomes your master volume. This is how I have mine setup and it's dead quiet. The only inconvenience is the volume is on the back. Or you can put a volume pedal/knob in the loop.

Played an SVP Pro for years during my rack mount days. I heard all the "noise" stories back then but it never seemed to be an issue at gigs. Just great Ampeg tone, GLWTS!
