The Birdsong Cortobass is handbuilt in Wimberly, TX. It’s unusual to find this level of custom workmanship in a short-scale (30 1/2”) bass, but this is done right. A great bass for any player, the shorter neck/string length makes this an excellent choice for players with smaller hands or stature. I have owned a half-dozen Birdsongs and have played or seen many others, and I can truly say that this is the most beautiful Birdsong I have ever seen by far.
The Cortobass features a 9-piece core construction with burled pecan, purpleheart and ebony, attached to walnut wings (notice the worm holes in the pecan center piece). The entire instrument is finished with a hand-rubbed oil/poly mixture, giving it a handsome low-luster appearance, reminiscent of some of our favorite old Alembic instruments. The maple neck has a 1.5” rosewood fretboard. The 5-bolt neck has a pronounced “V,” comfortable and very easy to play—and definitely solid-feeling.
The passive electronics consist of 2 Lace pickups: a single-coil neck and double-coil bridge for a bright, articulate tone with plenty of depth and definition. Vol/Vol/Varitone controls allow plenty of tonal variation—more than you might expect from a short-scale bass. But again, the luthiers at Birdsong did this right.
The bass comes complete with a TKL hardshell case.
