A wonderful 3/4 unlabeled (likely Chinese) bass. Closer to 7/8 in scale—but with smaller, sloped shoulders and a gamba shape (full measurements below). A quick and responsive instrument with excellent presence and a somewhat tapered low end, it fills a great spot in the mix. Due to the smaller shoulders, the upper register is easily accessible, and is where this bass speaks most freely. Neck reset and scroll repair have been performed at some point in its life, along with a less-than-perfect refinish…hence the good deal. The neck shape is reminiscent of the shape of some Shen’s—that is, medium overall.
New ebony bridge, tailpiece, nut and new tailgut. Strung with Spirocore Weichs, carbon fiber endpin, new adjustable bridge, ebony fingerboard. Very recent setup by local luthier, including top crack repair, side re-gluing, sound post setting. All existing cracks have been attended to, and cleated or repaired as necessary. 100% carved instrument, no plywood here—this bass is ready to go! The maple back and sides are unique in that they are inconsistent in grain pattern. The spruce top has even, medium spaced grain lines. Inlayed purfling on top and back.
