This bass is a rare (possibly only) example of a Gould bass done in jet black. It's hard to capture in pictures, but this is a seriously sexy bass - all black, with a beautiful patterned graphite neck and coco bolo fretboard. It's light (just north of 8 lb) and has a warmer sound than most Modulus basses. The neck is, hands-down the nicest graphite fabrication I've ever felt. It plays like butter - a tiny bit wider than a Jazz neck, but compensates with a smaller profile front to back. Frets are in good shape - apart from a little swirling and a small pock here and there, the body's in great shape. No dings or breaks in the finish.
For those who are fans of Modulus graphite instruments, Geoff Gould was the founder of Modulus. His background was in satellite technology and he was first to cook up a bass neck using graphite fabrication techniques used in spacecraft. After he left Modulus, he continued hand-building graphite necked basses and experimenting with new designs. His basses are all hand-signed and numbered on the back of the headstock. This one's #1120. If you're a Modulus fan, you'll love this bass. Non-graphite fans like it too, because it fits like a glove physically and has lots of warmer, woody tones - no graphite "clank". I've used it with every string from Rotos to Pyramid flats and gotten a huge range of great tones.

It was my main bass until I finally switched to 5ers last spring. I just can't afford to keep a four string when I've got a Modulus Quantum and am already Jonesing for a 5 string Gould (once the financial clouds dissipate). I switched from the 2 band EMG pre to the 3 band with sweepable mids. Having a mid control really multiplies the tones you can get without tinkering with your amp. The case is a molded Tech 21 that came with the bass from Bass Place in AZ.
