This is the Super Forty; our interpretation of the vintage Ashly SC-40 Instrument Preamplifier made famous by Geddy Lee of Rush.
Controls include: Level, Gain, and a set of semi-parametric 3-band EQ controls. Each band has ±15dB of boost or cut as well as a sweepable frequency control. The Low and high bands are Shelf-type EQs while the mid band is a peak type.
Low frequency range is 20-300Hz
Mid frequency range is 160Hz - 8kHz
HI frequency range is 700Hz - 8kHz
Toggle switches include Distortion, EQ Pre/Post, and Input High/Low.
The Distortion toggle adds a pair of symmetric clipping silicon diodes into the circuit. This is the same mod that Ashly recommended in their user manual to add the clipping diodes in the effects loop of the original preamp. The EQ Pre/Post toggle selects if the balanced and unbalanced output of the pedal is tapped before or after the EQ. Finally the Input High/Low allows you to select the appropriate attenuation based on an instrument or line level input.
The pedal uses a standard boss-style 9V power supply with an internal SMPS that generates ±15V to run the pedal. THis is the equivalent of running the pedal with a 30V supply giving plenty of headroom. We also use JRC4558 op amps throughout the pedal.
Each pedal uses a professionally assembled 4-layer PCB to minimize noise and is proudly assembled by hand in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
