I'm selling my hand carved Tyrolean gamba flatback bass from the mid 1800s. Made in the German/Tyrolean area in Europe. Gamba shape with flat-back, inlaid purfling, sides and back are tight flamed maple. Nice medium dark brown "violin" finish. I bought this bass from a friend and it's performed well in a variety of contexts... classical, jazz, bluegrass, tango, etc. It sounds great and has a beautiful, rich tone both pizz and arco

It has recently been to both Chuck Treagor and Mike Shank. Chuck did his scientific sound work on it and installed a nice mahogany endpin. Shortly before I bought the bass, Mike installed a new tailpiece, bridge, nut and ebony fingerboard, and more recently Mike installed a new tailpiece wire, soundpost and Fishman full circle pickup.

This is a full sounding, big 3/4 size bass. I've mostly had Garbos, guts and the heritage strings on this bass and they've all felt/sounded great on this instrument. I would consider a trade or partial trade for an electric (particularly looking for an older p-bass).

here are some approximate dimensions. String length is 42-3/4". Body length is 42-3/4". Lower bout is 25-1/4". Middle bout is 14-3/4". Upper bout is 20-3/8". Body depth is 8-3/8".

I'm asking $5000 (Mike Shank has this bass appraised at $10-12,000)

I'm located in Ardmore, PA (just outside Philadelphia). Come check out this great deal on a beautiful instrument!

    Hi Matt

    Your bass looks good.
Would you consider shipping it to Lisbon-Portugal?
    Thanks

I drooled over this bass for months and have played it a rack of times. It is an awesome instrument. And that was before Matt got the work done on it. Good luck with the sale!

  11. I'm putting this bass back on the market. It's strung with a new set of animas and is really singing. If you're interested in a big instrument with a big/deep tone, this might be the bass for you.

    $6000 obo. local pickup only.

  17. This bass is still for sale. Sad to say I have to part with it, mainly for financial reasons. I may put it on consignment somewhere soon, so please get in touch if you'd like a good deal on an excellent instrument! I'd love to see it left in good hands.
