Killer MTD 535 from 1999! This bass has a tulipwood body with a burl maple top ; simply beautiful to look at !! But even more beauty in its TONE! This has the Wenge neck and fingerboard and just cuts very well through any mix!!! Good for funk , jazz , country, blues , rock ! Etc .... Very versatile bass ; the 18 volt custom made Bartolini 3 band preamp is killer ! BUT the main factor here is the pickups !!! The first 800 MTD basses had Bartolini ACTIVE pickups; Bartolini no longer makes active pickups because it was too expensive to build a preamp into the pickup casing; this gives the bass a more modern sound than the current MTD basses that still sound great but have PASSIVE Bartolini pickups .

The bass is in great shape with only a couple of scratches but nothing serious ; it's a fantastic bass; I don't know what mr. Tobias does to his instruments but they just kick ass!!!

Bass is 35 inch scale ; and it includes case. The matching headstock , wenge neck , burl maple top and gold hardware make this a very expensive bass ($6500) if you were to order it new; but yourself a nice gift!

Shipping is free within the USA. I can ship to other countries but you have to contact me first and pay for the shipping, insurance and customs charges.

If you want to hear this bass thru phone or Skype let me know or call me at 202-445-3441.

Questions ?

Bartolini didn't stop making Active pickups for MTDs because they're expensive. Mike decided to switch to the Passive Pickups with an external buffer because Mike personally liked them better. But I've personally played early MTDs with the same woods as this one, and they do sound great! They even sound more 'Traditional' to my ears compared with the latest Pickup-Preamp with the same wood combo.

If anyone wants an MTD for under $3000, this is quite a catch.

GLWTS!!!

Thanks for clarifying ! It's good that Mike took that decision ! In any case I have heard that Bartolini does not make active pickups anymore because it was time consuming and expensive any way... Look in their catalogue you will see that they are all gone for good! I still have a set of P-J active bartolinis in one of my basses ; they sound great !

OPTION 2
If you prefer a solid Walnut MTD 535; you can choose for the same price this brown beauty instead ! Serial #486 From 1998; this bass sounds as good as the red one, and is MINT as new condition ; if you like "Topless" MTD's here's one ! It looks very elegant ; walnut is always a great sounding wood in a bolt-on or a Neckthrough bass; I am only selling one!!! So once one of them sells the other one will not be for sale; act quickly if you want a vintage MTD.

In the end my bills force me to sell my Walnut Wenge MTD 535 bass also . This bass is almost in like new condition ; only one very tiny scratch on the back of the body; it's from 1999; and I have the letter from Michael Tobias describing the bass ; this bass also has the Active Bartolini pickups that were used on the first 800 MTD basses or so. It includes the brown original hardshell case with green interior (see picture)
It slaps like crazy but also works great for other styles . A fantastic bass that I'm surely going to miss!
If you want to hear on Skype let me know... Its a Killer bass . Serial number #481. Early bass...
