Everyone interested in this bass should be aware of what just happened:

The seller listed this bass on ebay last week with no reserve. About 15 minutes ago, the bidding was up to around $2,600 with 4 minutes to go and 19 bids, and he started canceling all of the bids. As he kept canceling my bid, I just kept bidding again. I ended up winning the auction for $2,455, although my actual bid amount was substantially higher. I paid for the bass immediately, and one minute later, I received an email from ebay saying:

Your order was canceled
Hi <my name>,
We're sorry to let you know that redoneproduction canceled your order and mentioned the reason as I'm out of stock or the item is damaged.
You don't need to do anything else.

So since the bass is now either damaged or no longer in his possession, that means the seller will unfortunately need to find another way to deal with his financial situation that doesn't involve selling this bass.

Update: I just also received this email directly from the seller:

"Sorry I had to cancel the order - because item was damaged from sitting for a long time and I was on call with Ebay to cancel the bids but people were bidding like crazy - anyways sorry for the inconvenience- It won't be listed again due to damage. Sorry
Thanks for understanding i have canceled the order."

So I replied:

"Thank you for your note and for looking out for me, but there is no need to cancel. As long as it was not destroyed in a fire, I will still accept it even with the damage. Mike Tobias is a personal friend of mine, and I know that he will be glad to fix it for me. Please go ahead and complete the transaction."

Then I replied again:
"I thought of something. It is really a shame that this bass is damaged. It needs to be fixed and enjoyed. So I would like to offer to send you some money to pay for the repairs, and then you can re-list the bass. Please send me some photos and a description of the damage, and I will show them to Mike Tobias and get a repair estimate, and I will send you that amount either in cash or via PayPal and you can use it to get the bass repaired. Then you can either re-list it or just keep it and play it and enjoy it. You can send the photos directly through here by clicking on the "Attach photos" link above."

He replied:
"Thanks John for the generous offer but I am selling this bass for my friend and he notified me that the bass isn’t working could be controls or something else at the last moment & since there was bids I was not able to cancel them so I called eBay and got there help but since people we’re bidding the last moment bidding couldn’t be canceled so eBay had to cancel the order. My friend is not interested in re-listening and mentioned he might have other plans- payment is refunded though PayPal. Thx"

So there we have it folks -- this beautiful looking, brand new MTD bass is either defective, or it got damaged while sitting in the case. Oh well.
