This is The Lamborghini Orange Burst Reflex. The only one in existence. In early 2010, Randy Jackson wanted something fierce – and easy to notice - to play on TV with Mariah Carey. A Lamborghini orange was suggested and he got it. I'd been quietly wanting a Reflex, which was the flagship product from Music Man at the time, but figured I'd have to go with one of the 'standard' finish options. Imagine my surprise when I was told, "You want orange? We'll do that for you." Okay! During the build process, someone suggested a burst to make it truly unique. "Randy Jackson has an orange one, but only you will have this finish." Okay!
So this is the result. There is no other bass like this on earth. If you've ever wanted a custom Music Man bass, here's one of your few chances. It's in excellent shape, having been played out exactly once and then kept at home and in the case (included). I strung it with flatwound strings immediately, so fret wear is definitely NOT an issue. No dings, no damage to the finish.
Okay, the technical information: The Reflex bass is an evolution of the 25th Anniversary Bass and features the same comprehensive electronics package. This model is equipped with 3 pickups, which are, from the bridge: humbucker, single coil and single coil. The buttons select each pickup and any combination of pickups and also let you choose between active/passive mode. The body is ash with a maple top and also features a mahogany tone block (inside the body, the mahogany tone block runs from the neck to the bridge and is said to tighten up/add "mass" to the tone). The finish is high-gloss polyester and is, as advertised, Lamborghini Orange Burst. It is a standard 34" scale neck with 22 high profile frets. Obviously, this a 5 string bass, but I feel that I should mention that just in case. This one has a rosewood fretboard in perfect condition. Also, it comes with matching headstock (in Lamborghini Orange Burst, naturally).
The preamp(s) info: Passive preamp: 500kohm volume and 250kohm tone – .047µF tone capacitor; Active preamp: 4-band EQ – 25kohm volume, treble, high-mid, low-mid, bass. Your ideal tone is in here. As I always say, turn the knobs until it sounds good and then stop turning the knobs….although with this model, you can also push the buttons. The single coil pickups feature ceramic magnets while the humbucker at the bridge is the fancy neodymium magnet model (like the Bongo bass, Big Al, etc).
If you're a collector, this is one to collect. You can lord it over your pals and keep it where no one can touch it or even look at it for too long. The real deal is for the player, though – this bass is, no doubt about it, a player. The tonal possibilities are wide open; the humbucker will give you that classic Music Man snarl and you can dial in huge, wide thump with those single coils. Plus, well, I mean – look at it.
