So, this is kind of a long one since it covers two topics...
Last week I stopped in the petting zoo to unload some gear and while waiting I played two bass’s that made an impression on me. The first was a natural finish Squier Vintage Modifed 70’s Jazz that really surprised me. My judgements of Squier guitars had a paradigm shift! The second was a used G&L JB USA with white body and headstock and maple neck/fretboard. No doubt about it, that G&L was solid and rang out nicely. However, at this point for me, there’s no way I can justify dropping that kind of scratch on a bass. Half of what it costs is about my justifiable limit.
I really love the look of natural finish with neck binding and block inlays. I have been eyeing up and GASing over a Tribute JB for weeks since, I wanted to add a jazz pickup bass to the stable. This VM really “spoke to me” though, as they say. The neck surprised the hell outta me. Typically, satin finish feels better to me but the polyurethane on neck and fretboard not only felt great on this but, looked great too. The sound of the pickups had a lot more to offer than I was led to believe from video reviews, and the tone adjustment was more responsive than I expected too.
Anyway, I decided to order one online regardless of some anxiety and reservations that fit and finish and consistency would yield a sub par specimen considering the headstock label and price tag. It came yesterday and I couldn’t be happier. I was fearing knots in the grain, a twisted neck, imperfections in finish and alignment, sloppy hardware, and crappy setup. None of that! I mean, I cannot get over how impressed I am with this thing!
That leads me to the poll question. It got me thinking whether or not I would have this much joy from receiving a one of a kind custom “furniture bass” (not derogatory).
