NBD Yamaha John Patitucci 6 —— JP1

To say I absolutely love these basses is an understatement and after seeing the newer models show up with 35” scales and 26 frets made me regret not keeping my first or second JP1.
These basses have great tone , playability and build quality. I need to find a knob for the mid pot and it’s funny to see the word “used” stamped on the back of the headstock.

Wonderful axe (if the fingerboard suits you, wide for some). Contact Yamaha in Buena Park about that knob.

I'm intrigued, though: 'USED" and no s/n ? I've got no doubts it's a legit Yamaha, but that is really puzzling, as if were a NAMM sample or Artist sing-off proto. Didja find a s/n somewhere else? These are all MIJ by Yamaha Music Kraft, their best shop, and usually a s/n, etc., would be between the keys on the back.

That looks like the previous version of the JP2, which would make the current one, the JP3, technically. Unless you've got dip switches for the preamp inside the control cavity on your bass, then you still have at least a 35" scale JP2 bass, and not the JP1. Plus, I could've sworn that the JP2 and beyond went to an all-maple neck like yours (opposed to contrasting laminates).

Btw, one inch of extra scale length isn't a big deal, unlike most people think. It's one inch stretched from the nut to the bridge...that's not much. Now, the string spacing and neck carve/profile? Huge difference.

Very nice. I had one of those back in the day but it was just too much of a beast for me. I have said this before, but if Yamaha would have made that exact bass in a five string my bass shopping days would have been over long ago. Loved the tone and craftsmanship…just too much neck for me.

"Used" stamped typically means it was a B stock. Something in the finish likely didn't meet Yamahas high quality control standards, so was stamped "used" and sold as B stock. But now that it's actually used, it's all meaningless.

And to think companies charge more for that now and call it “relic” I’m having it redone as a project..... stay tuned I hope it turns out cool. Im thinking white translucent finish and maybe upgrading the tuners to the white JP2 style tuners.
