Happy FF to those who celebrate🥰

Small question for those who have done preamp installs with EMG pots - I see on their site that they offer the 25k volume pot in two lengths (10mm and 19mm, which they label strat and les paul respectively), and the blend in only one. I'm thinking about swapping to an lhz, and assuming I should use the 19mm volume pot - but will the blend be long enough?

The short length pots are the ones you want. The longs are only for Les Pauls or guitars with thick arched tops. Spectors use standard sized pots. I thought I needed the long pots, too but got talked out of it by the guy I get my EMG pots from.

I'm looking to buy a used Spector Euro 4LX with EMG's. However, I seem to remember years ago they made the 4 strings in both 34" & 35" scale. Is there nomenclature that would identify said bass as 35" scale? I'd rather know ahead of time what the scale length is as I have a feeling a lot of listings will just say "Euro 4LX" without mentioning anything about scale. Thanks guys.

The 435LX is what you're looking for. That's how they're labeled. They had the option of 2 TW EMG soapbars or a P/J pickup configuration. As far as the 5 strings are concerned, they're labeled "XL" for 35" scale (which pretty much all of them are since the early 2000s.

Usually, you can also tell by looking at them. The 4 LX and 435 LX are the exact same size, the bridge is just shifted back 1" on the 435. In this picture, the black stain is a 435lx the others are 34" scale.

In the P/J version of the 435lx, the volume control sits under the J pickup (which is shifted back with the bridge). As shown below:

hope this helps!

Ahhh, ok great. Thank you, that helps out a bunch. You got quite the nice trio there. I'll keep my eyes peeled for a used P/J version with EMGs & Tone Pump or EMG pre. I'd have to hear them side by side to try and see what the difference is sonically.

Does anyone know what type of preamp the black Spector that Jason is recording the Black Album with had? I'm not sure when "Tone Pump" became a thing so I was wondering if it had an EMG or Spector pre. I know it's a long shot asking here but you never know who might know this type of stuff, thanks.

EDIT: I guess Zach Harmon would know as I believe he's the tech in the video, however I wouldn't know how to reach out to him & even if I did - I'm sure he's busy 24/7 while on tour with Metallica.

As mentioned the best way is to compare the bridge to the control knobs, a 35" will have the bridge almost even with the lower most knob and not with the middle two. I am selling one- 2017, EMGs, 9v Haz preamp, 35" scale. I have owned the 435 TW model also and this one sounds more like the Jason Newsted Spector sound you're thinking of.

I'm going to guess it has a 9 volt HAZ. IIRC It's a US NS-2 that he bought from Phil Sousson, who used it during his time with Ozzy.

Nice bass. Has it been tuned to B since day 1 and do you use the bottom four strings of a 5 string set? I didn't even notice the inlays were missing which I like since both of my Zon's were like that.

Anyone with a US NS5-XL (the one with the stacked knob) that would be willing to take some pictures of their preamp?

Specifically looking for pics of the 18v Hazlabs preamp. Ideally pictures that clearly show the markings on the capacitors.

In the off chance someone has a board lying around outside of their bass, that would probably be much easier to photograph, as two of the pots are directly soldered to the board and kinda lock it into the cavity. If someone is willing to unscrew their pots for better pics, that would be incredible, but I'm sure most people won't want that level of inconvenience.

Model year of the bass would also be helpful. Somewhere during the run they've swapped from through-hole to SMD components, but I'm not entirely sure which year.

Thanks,
Lime.

So this arrived today. A VERY acceptable 8lbs 5oz. Darkglass/Barts are much more even, less "punch you in the face" than the EMG/Tonepump config. Setup beautifully. Plays wonderfully. Not as "flamey" as I would have hoped, but got it brand new at 35% off list so, I'll keep it. Box came damaged and open on one side. Delivered upside down. Sheesh.Thankfully the bass was unharmed. Looking forward to the dozens of gigs coming in the next few months. Swapped in black screws on the pickups. Like the clean look. Wish me luck.
