This thing fits in the palm of your hand. I used to just keep it inside my bass case. Runs on batteries. You connect it to your computer via USB and download mp3 or wav files (if you are into quality), then you can play along with the tunes on your headphones. You can also pull out the SD card and just load files directly onto it from your computer if it has an SD slot - often faster.
It allows you to loop parts, and slow them down. It will also record your playing so you can hear what you actually sound like rather than what your rock-star brain is imagining. Built in tuner and metronome too. Built in effects can be fun, but I usually ran it clean. Really just a great all in one tool for practice. Quite a bit less fussy than having dongles and apps on your phone, frankly.
