For sale is a rare 1967 Ampeg AEB‑1 bass, serial # 915, one of the earliest and most distinctive electric basses ever produced. Known for its carved scroll headstock and unique "mystery pickup," the AEB‑1 was designed to deliver an upright‑inspired voice with the feel of an electric bass. This example includes a near‑mint original Ampeg case, which is exceptionally hard to find in this condition.

Note: The right scroll wing is missing (see photos).
This bass was originally fretted, but the frets have worn down flush with the fingerboard over time, giving it a smooth, fretless‑style playing feel. Combined with the mystery pickup, it produces the deep, percussive "thump" tone these early Ampeg's are known for.

Key Features

  • Model: Ampeg AEB‑1
  • Serial # 915
  • Manufacture Year: 1967 (based on documented AEB‑1 serial research from xstrange.com)
  • Scale Length: 34.5"
  • Neck: Maple
  • Fingerboard: Ebony
  • Frets: Originally fretted; frets worn to the board → plays like fretless
  • Pickup: Original "mystery pickup" with classic Ampeg thump
  • Case: Near‑mint original Ampeg case

Condition

  • Neck/Fingerboard: Straight, smooth ebony board; frets worn down, resulting in a fretless feel.
  • Electronics: Mystery pickup functions properly, delivering the signature warm, upright‑style thump.
  • Body/Finish: Honest vintage wear, checking, and small dings consistent with a 1960s instrument.
  • Case: Near‑mint — clean exterior, intact lining, hinges and latches all working.

Why This Bass Matters

This is a rare 1967 AEB‑1 with its original mystery pickup and an unusually clean original case. The worn‑fret, fretless‑style playability pairs beautifully with the AEB‑1's natural thump, making it a compelling instrument for collectors, restorers, and players who want that unmistakable Ampeg voice.

Reason for sale: I'm parting with this bass due to health limitations after a stroke and am reducing the number of instruments I can manage. It deserves to be played and appreciated.
