Hey there! For sale I have a unique upright bass. This bass was made by Kay and endorsed by Chubby Jackson, a famous jazz & big band bassist. The model number reads S-51. It is Blonde.
The 5th string is designed to be a high C. You could tune it other ways like some people do use a low string as the 5th, and it holds. But I think it chokes the volume having that big low/c on there. The fingerboard is enlarged and rounded to accommodate the extra string, but the neck itself feels like a regular neck. I bought it to play, but I can't get used to that ridge on the fingerboard after 25 years of playing a 4 string. But I'm sure someone else can get used to it!
The body is in great shape, just a few nicks here and there. It doesn't have the horseshoe ebony neck heel anymore. But It does have the original Ampeg pickup/micand end-pin in place, though I couldn't get any sound from them. Perhaps they need repair to work. It's unusual pickups to be there as usually those things are changed or pulled off. It is in playable condition as it is, but it could use some love. I don't ship basses, so someone needs to pick it up here in Nashville TN. I would happily take a Ruggeri Shen type bass(violin corners, shiny finish) on trade for this bass. Assuming that the trade is worth $2000-3000 in trade value. But happy to sell it outright as well.
