Details

For sale is this very unique instrument built by virtuoso bassist and luthier Kip Sophos. It features beautiful burled maple facings and a Rockwood through body neck that is next to indestructible. It has a truss rod but probably will never need it. The neck has a very slight amount of relief built in and is literally rock stable. If you are tired of having to adjust your truss rod to keep your action where you want then this is the bass for you!

The neck profile is quite thin and is super comfortable and fast. The bass plays very well and speaks with a clear even tone in all registers. The low B is about the best I have ever played all the way up the neck. Width at the nut is 55mm, 24th fret is 84mm, and string spacing at the bridge is 17mm. Weight is about 10.5lbs on my bathroom scale.

Asking $1600, pp is okay on this one. Thanks for looking and please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the comments. As far as sound clips I don't have any recordings with this instrument. All my work the past couple years has been on upright. The sound is very versatile, it can do P bass, or more modern cutting tones. But it always has a nice growl happening. I have the action set very low so it's easy to play chords or quick runs. Kip is a Jazz virtuoso and builds these with that in mind. So this one can do the nice thumpy pseudo upright tones all the way to a more Patitucci or Jimmy Haslip vibe.

pm replied. Thanks for your interest. I certainly appreciate trade offers but really just need money for now. If that changes down the road then I will put up a list of trade interest items.
Thanks all!

This bass has a very nice growly tone that cuts through. And the neck is absolutely unique. There is no other builder that I know of currently using this material to make a neck that rivals pretty much anything else out there. There are a couple of small flaws which I will try to provide better pictures of soon. The front pickup cover has some scratches from cross grain sanding which were present when I bought it. The last control knob is a double stack and the upper knob is attached with a rubber washer which is sub optimal. David King of dknob.com can remedy this easily. And there are two small strap button screw holes which were filled at the upper horn strap attachment. Also, on the back, the fit tolerance of the control cavity cover could be better. There is a bit more gap around the edges of it then I usually like to see. However, these defects do not affect playability and only minimally detract from this basses beauty.

This is a players bass. It was used on stage by Kip when he first built it, and then he sold it to one of his students who gigged it as well. It plays and sounds fantastic. If you want a mint condition custom 6'er from Kip then please contact him and contract with him to build you your dream bass. He is a great guy and can make just about anything you want.

If you don't mind a few imperfections then please contact me. I need to raise some funds immediately and will be open to offers on this instrument. I still do not appreciate lowballs but run your cash offers by me. The worst I can do is counter for a little more.

Thanks for looking!

Interesting. Thanks for info. BTW - I know Kip from the local scene here. He runs a session on Tuesdays near me. It would blow his mind if I walked in with one of his basses. HA!

I'm on vacation now. I'll mull it over.

Kip would love that! And I would like to see the look on his face when you pull this bass out on stage. You should go for it. Get in touch and we'll work something out.
