I bought this beauty from Guitar Center Boston while looking for a Fender custom shop P bass or J bass. They had two custom shop P basses and one custom shop J bass. After trying all three I noticed from the corner of my eye the used MVP5 sitting on a stand. I said to myself "not really what I'm looking for but what the heck... You don't see used MVP5s in your local music store that often these days. Lets try it anyway". Holy moly!!! Having worked for Guitar Center for over 8 years back in the early 90s this is undoubtedly the best sounding Pedulla bass I have ever put my hands on. Believe me I have tried and sold many Pedullas over the years, some new, some used. The price on this one was very low as GC is no longer really interested in selling or purchasing this caliber of electric basses or at least not for the prices they typically command so the guy who sold it to GC must have taken a huge hit. My win, his loss although I have been in his shoes a few times in the past myself. This MVP5 completely blew the doors off the three cst shop Fender basses as well as all the other basses in the store that day so I took it home but as great as this bass is it is still not what I am looking for. I want a solid color, non gold hardware NYC Sadowsky, Alleva-Coppolo or Fender custom shop 5 string bass as my Burl maple top STR LS549 is too fancy looking for some of the gigs I do.
I contacted Christine at Pedulla. Her reply: "Serial# XXXX was the MVP 5-string with 19mm string spacing, AAA Flame Maple, Soapbar pickups, gold color hardware, and Natural color finish. It was made in 2007".
This is a used instrument but condition is excellent. I took pictures of all the imperfections I could. Other ones were too small to capture with my camera. I have always set up my own basses and I play with very low action requiring an impecable fret job. As expected this bass totaly delivers in this department. It actually has one of the smoothest and most effective truss rods I have ever used. One 1/8th to 1/4" of a turn is about all you'll ever need once it is acclimated. The case (included) is fully functional but it is not in tip top shape as it features more dings and scratches than the bass itself. I would give the bass a rating of 8.9 and the case a 7.
