1985 - Back to the Future premiers, VH-1 makes its debut broadcast, the Internet's Domain Name System is created (Al Gore isn't mentioned) and Hondo makes the Fame Series 861 bass guitar. What a great year, and what a great instrument. What's not to love about this rare bird?

Made in Japan for only one year, it boasts the following features: multi-laminate wood body (plywood), maple neck, rosewood fretboard, 20 frets, tilt-back pointy headstock, Fender-ish body, P and dual-J pickups, vol/tone/pup-selector switch & single/dual-coil switch, metal knobs, Grover open tuning machines, mirror pick-guard, string-through bridge/body, the list goes on. (Note: matching zebra print spandex pants NOT included!!!)

And just like big hair, the paint just screams "I love the 80's!" After almost 30 years it now shows some yellowing/discoloration that says, "Yeah, that's right - I'm vintage." It's got that special kind of 'mojo' going on that will take you back in time - whether you've been there or not.

Overall it's still in great shape. The neck is straight, the frets show no appreciable wear, it has been strung with brand new DR Marcus Miller Fat Beams and plays great. Intonation is set, but you may wish to adjust the neck relief and action to your liking. The tone pot is a tiny bit scratchy - just needs some use as I've already cleaned it out. There are various scuffs and a few nicks that validate it's age, but no major gouges or damage. This is no safe queen and should not be treated as such - get it out and play it!!

Starting at $389 shipped CONUS via FedEx Ground. I DO NOT have a bag or case for it - it will be packaged with care; if I can find a bag/case for it that may alter the price, it all depends. If you gotta have one we'll work something out.

Ask any questions you wish - this is a neat bass, apparently rare (it was only made the one year in '85) and produces some interesting tones given the combinations of the switches (it's all passive 'lectronics in it). Here goes nothing!

Forgot this pic - back of the headstock. And, of course, the flash makes the tuners look either pitted or wet. :meh:

Now, the icing on the cake - also included will be a very nice Get'm Get'm fuzzy zebra print strap!
(These are about $50 new, I'm including for FREE! No, I still will not include spandex!!)

Great post, but I don't have any cash. Good luck with the sale!
A guy I know on strat-talk relined a case with zebra print.... I say a zebra print lined case would complete this

Watching.
Fame is the "better" Hondo, it has the best tuners, and it has the additional pickup.

Not interested, but perhaps my favorite post ever in the classifieds. Well done.

Thanks. Just trying to have fun, as the ridiculous paint scheme of this bass implies.

I'll keep a look-out for one. :D

Thanks for the endorsement. FWIW I had a Deluxe 880 (Explorer shaped) before and it was also a great bass.

I like your priorities, lol! PM replied, bass is yours!

Side story - showed it to my friend tonight who wanted to make a trade plus cash. His trade wasn't worth it so I had to decline, but I did play it through is rig - an old Kustom K250 (that I cleaned up and tested for this indie shop I was at) and a Behringer 410 cab. I know how that amp sounded through my GK 810 with my other bass - and it is a certified monster! The Behringer cab was no slouch either - I had the rafters along with all the drum sets rattling and he was blown away by the tone (and so was I!) I was actually contemplating keeping it - or at least until my band-mates could see and hear it (I was imagining laughter followed by dropping jaws...)

Still, I don't think I could get the zebra print to fly in the metal band I'm in, so it's probably for the best. Enjoy it mate...

I getting somewhat infamous in the band I'm in now(since 2006) as the bassist who plays 99% no-name/off-brand basses that sound great and are audience eye-candy. All in good fun and entertainment(2 CD's of originals & about 300+ covers to remember).

Awesome - so I gotta ask you to send me a pic of you & your band with the bass in action. :D

Oh man, I would say that this would go great with a metal band! I was in a death metal band a little while back as a guitarist(Palm mute and bar top three strings, easy peasy stuff), and that would definitely fit right in. Congrats on the quick sale, thanks for the awesome listing+story, usually don't get a good read in classified.
