I bought this bass from the classifieds here last year.
I wanted a 65 (birthyear) P for years, and finally found the one. However, when I got it, it was not in great shape. The seller refinished it in Lake Placid Blue nitrocellulose. Not very well.
And it had non-original gold hardware. But, I thought, for what I paid, I could fix those things.
I took it to Kevin Caton from Caton Guitars in Chicago (http://www.catonguitars.com). Kevin also ran the US shop at Lakland Basses
I had a Candy Apple Red nitro body only refinish done. Neck finish is untouched by me. We did a refret, new bone nut, and replaced the hardware with Fender Reissue parts (bridge, reverse tuners, thumb rest and pickup cover. Pickguard is original. We could not determine if the pickup is original. Serial Number is L5875*
The neck is VERY straight
This bass plays amazing!! Unfortunately, since all the work has been done, I have not been playing much. I have 5-6 hours on this bass TOPS.
Weight is 8.6 lbs according to my bathroom scale.
Comes with era correct case. I can throw in a new set of Chromes I never installed

Hello,

It's hard to make out the serial number in your photo. Is it 158758? If so, then I think your bass dates to 1966 or 1967, not 1965, and only the neck dates to 1965.

I own a similar Precision. Its serial number dates to 1969, but its neck (also a C type) is stamped 1967. I happen to believe that its pickups date to 1967 latest, too, since they have black bottoms. But because of what little I know of the instrument's history, I feel pretty sure that it was assembled at the factory in 1969.

My understanding is that it was common for Fender to use whatever factory parts were at hand, and that special order parts (as I've heard C bass necks were) may have sat unused for some time before being built into an instrument for sale.

Anyway, nice bass. :)

He says in his post it is a 'L' serial bass, which is correct for 1965.

If it were red sparkle finish, I would already have sent you payment :-)

Someone scoop this up for themselves!

1965 Ps transitioned from L plate to F plate during the 1965 production year.

Some folks call the Ls "Leo's Models", and they're generally considered to be the last of the basses made with "mostly" Pre-CBS parts, or at minimum, Pre-CBS production methods and personnel.

That's a beautiful refin job. Nice bass.

Humbled, thats the best description of L Series I've heard. I tried to find the significance of the L Series, and found nothing

It's a blurry line, as hardware was "binned" on the production line with new replenishment parts dumped in bins on top of older parts, and the production line workers pulling from the top of the pile. The generalization still holds true on 1965 production though, as they depleted the bins pretty quickly. That said, an "L plate" instrument is always going to be a bit more collectable than an "F plate" '65.

Just want to say that I have a 65 P neck, have had it on several bodies over the years. It's still my gold standard for necks. GLWTS!

(Give me a call if you want to sell the body... yeah, that would be a crime against humanity, just sayin'...)
