A-BASSES, JADE BASS......hand made in the USA (1999)
This bass is a rare bird built by Albey Balgochian. Albey is responsible for creating the Darryl Jones signature model (pre Lakland). This bass, the JADE Bass, was its predecessor. Albey shut down A-BASSES to focus more playing. He then transferred the rights to Lakland to produce the DJ signature model. Due to the limited number of guitars Albey made, they are rare birds indeed.
The JADE bass is/was designed around Darryl's 60's Jazz Bass. Due to that fact, a great amount of effort was put into recreating the feel of his guitar's neck. The guitars Albey made have a worn in feel about them that is reminiscent of slipping on an old comfortable pair or your favorite blue jeans. The neck on this guitar is no different. It's about as close as you can get to the feel of 60's jazz neck short of buying a 60's jazz. It is truly one of the most comfortable necks of any guitar I have ever played.....and I've played many! The fit and finish is spectacular as well. I would hold this to the same level of quality as any Lakland, Sadowsky, or CS Fender any day. It truly is a remarkable bass made by an under the radar builder. Here are the specs
