Hey all!

I bought this Roland GR-55 a while ago with the intention of supplementing my bands sound with a second guitar sound while I was playing bass. This thing works PERFECTLY for that! My issue seems to be my, hopefully not, incurable GAS:)banghead::crying:)! I need to move this in order to get some other stuff I "NEED"!

So, what is it? It's a guitar synth! This lil box lets you play all those instruments you've always wanted to play, but never wanted to take the time to learn! With the right gear(which is included!), you can play guitar, sax, keys, trumpet, violin, and a veritable cornucopia of other finely modeled instruments! What else do you need? Well, in order to get the most out of it, you'll also need a Roland GK-3B pickup. This comes with, not one, but, TWO GK-3Bs! Now you don't hafta decide which bass to put the pickup on! I've also got the power supply, and the GK cable.

As an added bonus, I'm also including a Boss ME-50B bass multi-effects unit(I was only using it for silent practice. It was hooked up to my desktop. Now I have an Apogee One and a new iPad, so not only can I still practice in silence, but I can do it in my bedroom, which the wife REALLY likes, LOL!). It also comes with it's power supply.

I may have the manual for the ME-50B, but I don't think I have it for the GR-55(I surprised anything even comes with a manual anymore!).

The GR-55 will also do multi-effects, but now, you can have both!

I need to add in a disclaimer about the GK-3Bs:

I have hardware for one of the pickups. The hardware for both was bent, but one of them was REALLY bent, to the point it was unusable if you have a flat bodied bass. I couldn't even reuse it on my curved basses. I was just going to buy new hardware, but I found some other stuff I "need", so I'm just opting to sell it all now. If you want the one with the hardware, that's fine. Just know that if you have a flat-bodied bass, you may need to bend it...:thumbsup:. Again, both pickups work PERFECTLY!

So I have one GK-3B WITH hardware(slightly bent to fit a curved-bodied bass)and 1/4" cable that plugs into the bass...

And I have another GK-3B WITHOUT the hardware, but it does have the 1/4" cable AND it has the leveling foam pads...

Hope that makes sense...LOL!

I've been curious about these synth pedal setups, in regards to actual MIDI conversion. You can buy a MIDI converter to run the pickup into, rather than putting it into the pedal, which then converts what you're playing to straight up MIDI that other synths can recognize, from what I understand. Does the pedal do the same thing? Can you get unaffected MIDI output, via a MIDI cable, through the pedal? I haven't been clear on whether the pedal actually converts the signal into MIDI and can output that clean MIDI signal or whether it works on some other protocol internally. Thanks!

If I'm understanding you correctly, which I may not be, the answer to your question would be no. Since the GR-55 doesn't have MIDI Thru capability, the MIDI out would be the affected signal. You can use the MIDI out to drive other MIDI devices, but the internal protocols may not be ideal for whatever external devices you want to trigger...;). Hope that helps.

Hello again!
I was just going down the rabbit hole of current MIDI converters offered by Roland/Boss, etc, and it seems like they've discontinued the straight up converters in favor of pedals like this. Watching one of the overview videos for the GR-55 and checking out this leaflet: http://cdn.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/gr-55_leaflet.pdf, it seems like they're claiming you can actually send converted MIDI output - over USB to a DAW, anyway. Maybe not via the 5-pin MIDI out to another hardware synth. Are you sure it can't be used this way, to send converted but plain MIDI data to a computer, for triggering VSTis? Thanks again for the info!

I'd guess that it's possible, but I'm not gonna kid you, I never got that deep with it. I just wanted to play bass and guitar at the same time. I've read other places where guys have used the GR-55 as a USB or MIDI audio interface into a DAW, but that above my current pay grade. It's on my list of things to learn, but, right now, I can only speculate that you MAY be able to do that, but I really dunno...:(
