This past year, I decided to give onboard preamps another try. I got an aguilar obp-3 and installed it on a jazz plate (with side jack). It has an active/passive switch as well as a series/parallel switch. Controls are volume/passive tone (with oil in paper cap), active bass/treble stacked, mids w/push-pull for freq change, and blend. Has John East knobs and it looks great. Wired for 18V. Everything works perfectly, preamps are just not for me.

I worked hard to get the wiring just right on this and it sounds great. It's essentially an East Preamp setup with Aguilar guts. HOWEVER, and this is reflected in the price, it's a home job done by me, meaning, it all works and it has been done correctly, but some of the wires could be shorter, etc.. Also, I needed to use my dremel to slightly widen the control cavity in two spots to make it fit. Also, you'll need to have a battery box on your bass or def have space for batteries. If you just have a regular jazz and plan on cramming the batteries into the cavity under it, it won't work. I tried :)

Anyway, this is a great preamp project that would be great for someone who is a little bit handy. If you are in NYC, I'd be happy to work out installation with you.

The only partial trade I'd be looking for is a set of hipshot ultralight clover tuners.
