For sale ACG EQ-02 filter preamp (Alembic/Wal style)

How close would you rate these to an actual wal type sound?

I would have no idea - I've never played a Wal bass (nor an Alembic). I imagine it's much down to the pickups, body wood, etc.
If all those things were equal, I suspect you could get pretty close using this preamp.

I've never owned a Wal, but had an Alembic pickup/ filter preamp set that I directly compared to my old ACG preamp. If you paired the pre with a super low-impedance/ low output pickup I think you'd probably be able to get a great Alembic or Wal type of tone out of it (the pickups on both those basses are fairly unique for passive pickups, and really designed to be paired with a preamp). Normal output passive pickups limit the frequency response of the preamp in the high end because the frequency response of the pickups starts rolling off in the hi-mid/low-treble region where the preamp really does alot of its magic in those basses. At least in the case of Alembic pickups, the pickups themselves are fairly weak and lack much inherent character apart from a fairly flat frequency response, which is the perfect response to let the preamp shine.
These are fantastic preamps though if you really dig that kind of sound (which can't really be emulated by anything but a resonant filter-based pre)- you just might have to be prepared to find the right pickup pairing to get you where you want to go!

Thanks for the info, my friend. Well, I had planned on buying a set after I had researched about building my own multi-coil pups, but I guess it wasnt meant to be.
