Offering up a completely original and super fun ESP 5 string Jazz!
This started life in neck only as a sunburst J-205 model, a sleeper as far as affordable narrow-er necked J 5 are concerned!
I got the itch to do a Alleva-coppala on a budget and thought this would be a good platform!
- Neck is Maple/rosewood finished with 10 coats waterlox and 10 coats of tru-oil buffed to near Nitro levels
- Relatively thin front to back with a Bone nut width of 1 3/4"
- the 21st fret neck has a heel width of 2 5/8"
- This J features a neck radius of 14"
- Callahan real clay dots replaced the former position markers on the front and side of the neck
- The 12th fret "ESP" logo was replaced with a small slab of rosewood and replaced with the clay dots
- I used my family business, Fretware guitars, as the logo for this bass in Fender font, Clear nitro covers the front of the headstock! Very classy!
- Hipshot USA ultralite tuners were installed with the round key
- I had the board re-fretted with medium frets and they are excellent!
- I used Onyx Forged neck inserts when installing the neck to the body, it is very stable and very tight neck joint! Definitely helped with the bass' resonance!
- The Body is 2-pc alder and features the ESP Dinky J body design that is slightly downsized. I took the original body and fashioned a new one from wood available from Carvin Guitars. I took a bit more from the front arm contour and the rear tummy contour to facilitate a more contoured fit when using a strap.
- I used 20 coats of Waterlox and 12 coats of Tru-oil to finish the bass. It feels great and was naturally golden-ed when I buffed it out to its satin color! Very nice!! This is the recipe for finishing a body in oil! all major dents or damage are present in the pics.
- I used regular dunlop strap locks and set them into the body for a flusher look. I attempted to use a strap button a few inches from the lower button to help bring the bass closer to my body. You will seean extra hole, sorry!
- A Hipshot Vintage bridge was used. It feature .687 or roughly 17.5mm sting spacing. The original bridge was used for a minute until it was discarded. Small dowels do cover the old bridge footprint.
- A new pickguard was fashioned after the original with the Tortoise available from warmoth guitars. They have the best Tortoise material, IMO. Looks great and looks real.
- The pickups, which are only the plastic shells of the original, were re-slugged and wound by Lindy Fralin, a good friend of our business. Fralin also supplied the pots and controls for the control plate! These were wound +5% over for a slightly hotter pickup. They are in exact 60's J bass position. You cannot find a stock replacement pickup that fits this bass' dimensions!
- a custom radius ramp in rosewood was fitted to the bass perfectly, I have never taped it down! Easily removable!
- This bass weighs in around 8lbs 13oz's to 9lbs with the ramp installed.
- One of the only things "ESP" that is left on this bass is the neck plate which is irreplaceable do to its shape, which allows comfortable access to the final fret. Only things left that are ESP?? Neck plate, string retainer, neck (wood) and shells of pickups.
- I am including a brass nut cut for E-C tuning and a Hipshot string retainer that I never installed.
DR FAT beams 40-100 strings are installed with a D'addario .130 B string. I prefer a hex wound B string to get a bit more stiffness out of it but the B is fine, ESPecially in the "money" zone!
- A soft fender gig bag is included.
I am selling because I am mostly preferring another bass, I hate to see this sit! You will enjoy a nicely balanced, 60's feeling and sounding 5 string jazz that is unlike any other!
