1850 shipped continental US. Partial trades will be considered - see later in the post for things I'm interested in.

Edit: Price dropped to match results of appraisal (quoted below); many pics of disassembled bass / components in comment #6 below (same pics that were sent to Gruhn's for the appraisal).

The bass is an amazing player, and was a really inspiring instrument to own and perform on, but it's just a little too heavy for me lately. It never bothered me before, but suddenly it does. It's around 10 lbs 2 oz to 10 lbs 4 oz (can't get a completely consistent reading on my scale). It has a B neck width (1 5/8" nut), original ashtrays, and just plays and sounds like heaven.

Partial trades considered:
Pigtronix Infinity Looper
BeatBuddy drum machine
TC Helicon VoiceLive 2 or 3 vocal harmony generator

I have examined the attached photos of the instrument described below, but have not seen the instrument itself. Below is my estimate, based on these photos, of the instrument’s value; however, it is not possible to judge from photos alone the exact state of originality and need of repair, so my appraisal is only accurate insofar as the photos are representative of the actual condition of the instrument.

We certify the electric guitar described below is, in our opinion, a Fender Precision Bass model made in the year 1974.

Description: We have been provided the following information: “Serial number on neck plate: 546305. Neck code on heel of neck: 0103 2323. No legible writing in neck pocket of body. The finger rest is below the G string instead of above the E string. When I removed the pickguard, the holes are there drilled for the 1974 thumb rest position.”

This bass guitar features a one-piece maple neck with an unbound integral maple fingerboard. The fingerboard is inlaid with 9 black position markers. The tuners appear to be correct and factory original. The ash body has a blond finish and there is evidence of shimming in the neck bolt holes. The body has been drilled for finger rest installation in both upper and lower positions, a production change which dates to 1974. The laminated white/black/white/ beveled edge tortoise shell grain pickguard dates to 1973 or earlier. The date code on the tone potentiometer indicates a manufacturing date during the 10th week of 1973. The bottom of the pickup bobbin is gray and correct for the period. The bobbin date code (X273) indicates a manufacturing date during the second week of 1973. We were unable to make a detailed in-hand assessment of the pickups, potentiometers, capacitors and wiring, but from photos provided we assume them to be correct. The original bridge guard and neck pickup guard are present and installed. The instrument is with a period-correct black Tolex case with red interior. While the neck plate serial number dates to 1974 these plates were stamped in large quantities and then used in random order so the numbers do not strictly correspond to the final assembly dates. The ink-stamped neck code is of a type used by Fender after March of 1973. It confirms that the instrument is a Precision bass, but does not contain any dating information. The bass guitar shows construction features from both 1973 and 1974 but because the most recent constructional features date to 1974 we believe that date to be accurate. This is an instrument which would appeal mainly to musicians, rather than collectors.

Current market value: $2,000 (two thousand dollars)

Does the bridge have the long G string intonation screw? I think this is a 1973 bass. By 1974, the tug bar had been moved into the thumb rest position (which makes your bass more collectable). Nice bass here guys!

@Rob S Hmmm, interesting. I'll have to look. Maybe I'll get a formal written appraisal. Thanks for the tip!

@Tanner1994, not really interested in Rays, thanks.

Hi, Rob - Ok, it does not have the long G string intonation screw. But obviously the bar is in the 73 and earlier position. Serial on the neck plate looks like 74. I'm wondering if it was some sort of transitional thing? Anyway, I'm going to take it apart tonight and check the neck and body dates, and lookup the pots, and will post an update (and update the OP).

Thanks!

Ok, I have a bunch of photos that I'll upload here. It's also lighter than I thought, hovering right between 10 lbs 2 oz and 10 lbs 4 oz. Losing the ashtrays and going with lighter tuners could get it down below 10 lbs, which is cool (to me at least).

So I think I have pretty much every pic that might be needed to really evaluate this, or at least I hope so. I didn't remove the bridge or the tuners, but did pretty much everything else.

Is it expensive to get the Gruhn appraisal? Cool that you did that.

Hey there - the online appraisal, where you submit pictures and they work from that, is $50. That's what I did. I submitted basically most of the pics that I posted in comment #6 of this thread. An in-person detailed appraisal runs $75. For an in-depth appraisal of true collector pieces, where you want every single bit authenticated, it's more, variable on a case-by-case basis.
