Previously used with Schaller Strap Locks

4 1/2″ garment leather bass strap with foam padding and garment leather backing.
Adjustable from 36″ to 52″.

This question is kinda of subject, but I just got a really nice padded Levis strap . Bought schaller strap lock. I am having a hell of a time screwing them on the strap itself. Tried pushing down with flat tip screw driver. Squuezing it with needle nose and a vise.
I can not compress the leather enough to get the nut to attach.
Any tricks would be great.
