Details

This is a Robles Bass Violin from the famous Toenniges Bass Shop in California. The bass was originally made in Guadalajara, Mexico, circa 1950. It is a 3/4, violin-cornered, round-back instrument. The top, back (one-piece), and sides are made of cedar. The neck and scroll are made of poplar. The tuners are made of brass and the varnish is a deep reddish brown. The Robles has a warm and lush sound. It is very deep and rich when bowed, very much like an old Italian instrument. It was actually mistakenly identified as an Italian bass at first! The pizz is punchy and full, perfect for jazz. It has a smaller, comfortable string length. Measurements are as follows:

String Length: 39.5"
Body Length: 40"
Upper Bout: 18.5"
Center Bout: 13.75"
Lower Bout: 23.75"

I'm asking for $14,000. I'm located in New York, NY. Please contact me if you are interested. For more info and pics, go to http://s1286.photobucket.com/albums/a610/lshermanmusic/

For what it's worth, when I first started looking for smaller basses about 6 or 7 years ago, there was a Robles bass at World of Strings that I almost bought (I wound up with a bass by Jorge Vasquez de Anda - also from Mexico).

It was a very well made bass and very "Italianate" in sound. I don't the seller or his particular bass, but I wouldn't let the fact that the bass is from Mexico deter a potentially interested buyer.

I have one of these also, and it is a great warm sounding bass that is easy to play.
