Back on the market! Previous deal got unwound and in effort of full disclosure I'll give the reasons and stress this is a well priced players bass. Its 45 years old so it's not gonna to be a perfect museum piece, but if you look at prices for an early 70s p basses at this time the $1500-$2k market usually gets you something that is for lack of a better phrase, fairly trashed, this bass is not trashed but it has been played a lot for 45 years and that shows.
The issues reported to be transparent: bridge needs to be moved to align g string from the edge of the fretboard.(came as a shock as to my knowledge the bridge is in original location. I Never noticed the string being closer to the edge on that side, and it never effected my playing)
Electronics need to be replaced, I believe pots and input jack. (there is an original pot and wiring I believe so there's some scratchiness there but otherwise I just had input replaced 2 weeks ago and 1 pickup rewound at the same time. Between the 2 shops that handled these jobs, no other repairs were mentioned.) nonetheless be aware a pot or 2 and an input(again?) may need replacing I guess depending on your preference.
Refret needed at some point. (I thought there was meat left as did the shop I go to and typically they'll fret level if I need it or recommend a refret. I only play flats so I was never worried about it at all) however again this is a 45 year old player so you can probably plan at some point a refret will be in your future.
I've tried to price this and will take partial trades that even if you actually decided to do the above listed repair items this is still a great bass at a great value for a 1972 P bass with an "A" neck
I'd much prefer to sell this in person so there's no questions or surprises that inevitably come along with a vintage piece of gear but will give shipping this another shot if someone wants it. In person I'm happy to lower the price since there will not be shipping or PayPal fees. Just PM me
I really don't want to let this go and I'm still trying to avoid it but due to some unexpected financial circumstances I need some cash.
I absolutely love this bass, it's got the most comfortable neck I've ever played. Its been my daily player for the last year plus. Its 1.5" at the nut like a jazz neck but it's not as skinny as a jazz neck in a good way. It also feels slimmer than the 78' p bass "A" neck I used to have, it's just right. Truly a great playing, looking and sounding bass.
Non original parts that I am aware of: the Pickguard I replaced the non original that was on it with a white spitfire Pickguard that I had mark make me for this bass.
One of the pots is replaced I believe I still have the original which was given to me with the bass. I just replaced the input jack a few weeks ago, the original worked but was not holding the 1/4 cable in well(I still have the original)
Tugbar isn't original but I bought a tugbar off a 72' that was being parted out so it's the accurate tug bar.
I believe 1 screw in the bridge I think the g string, which seems to be replaced on a lot of these years for some reason.
And the nut which I think is brass.
I think strap buttons are non original.
Pickups are original. However one pickup just died a few weeks ago and I had it rewound at blackcat guitars in massachusetts. They did a great job, sounds exactly like it did prior...absolutely awesome tone, cuts with an edge but not harsh...very smooth
There is a jazz route that's been plugged and painted. There was also some routing that was plugged and painted under the Pickguard.
I think everything else is original
On the get on and off the bathroom scale method I got in the 8.6-8.8lbs which jives as my other p bass is 8.6 and they seem to weigh exactly the same. Funny though when you hold this neck because it's so slim it just feels lighter!
I don't have the original case, but it'll come in a gig bag.
I haven't put a ton of thought into the price because I just learned today I need to sell. Ive got over $2k in it but it's a tough one to price because it's a refin with a well patched j route(outline can be seen from close but only the very slight outline, can't see from any distance) and it's not all original but otherwise in fantastic shape, well cared for(the neck is beautiful shape). And it's a lightweight "A" width 1972 P bass! Its easily the best 70s fender I've ever owned which is easily into the double digits
It has a nitro finish refinish done professionally, at first a light yellowed Olympic white but after a year I had him go a little more yellow. So it pops now, tried to capture it in a few lights but even when I'm just looking st it in different light it looks different. He even did the shadowing under the Pickguard and bridge. It's also got almost a satin finish. I wet sanded some spots to get through the top coat and yellow to the white as you can see in pics. I was planning on having it further reliced as well had even reached out to mjt to fully relic but now I need to let her go.
I've done my best to describe the color,refin, sanded areas, non original parts, issues that have been reported by someone else which we're news to me but should be part of this post. I've also taken the best pictures in different light I could. I have tried price this very well based on these variables but inevitably when you receive it in person it may look slightly different than the picture or may feel or play or sound differently than you expected, which are all pretty much par for the course for any bass but definitely a vintage players bass, if you're not the type of person that is comfortable with that level of rolling the dice than please pass on this one.
If you're looking for a well played but loved and cared for to best of my preferences and the recommendations of my repair shop then this is a good opportunity to get into a lightweight 1972 player's bass with a fairly rare neck at a very good price.
I'd also be interested in partial trades plus cash: top of the list is a Broughton P15, Noble preamp, Shaw tube injection preamp pedal, Monique, meat smoke preamp pedal
Would also consider fender basses, or something reliced like an mjt bass, or a mij p bass neck Or quality audio interface like audient or universal audio
Willing to entertain other offers as well but predominantly preamps and basses
I have a 2017 nash pb63 listed as well, I'd love to clear $3k between the 2 so if someone is in massachusetts or a neighboring state you could get a pretty sweet deal for both basses for $3k!
