That's a good question and as I did not use them as a set I don't have the experience. You could always buy the E/A/G and then buy a light D somewhere else.

Did you ever happen to use the E/A with plain gut D/G? Thoughts?

I have on my plywood Chadwick Folding bass and thought it was a decent match. On my Juzek the E/A were a bit bright compared to the gut G/D
