I posted this a month or so ago and had second thoughts about selling it because it really does sound great. But I've decided to sell the Traynor Small Block 500 head. Everything is in great condition except the right pull tab on the front is bent.

The power cord and manual are included.

$325 shipped within continental US

I'm interested in trading for a GK MB500 or a Fender Rumble 500 (head or combo)

Thanks for the reply. I purchased the Traynor used and it was shipped to me in inadequate packing. Something heavy was place on the box and it tore the front off the box, but in the process it also bent the front right pull tab. I opened up the amp and checked everything out thoroughly and could not find any damage to the boards, pots, etc. inside. I didn't file a claim with shipping since it was just the tab that appears to be damaged. I've been using the amp for about 6 weeks now and everything works like it should. A person could probably bend the pull tab back in place but I haven't done so in fear that I might damage the powder coat finish.

As for the trade: it looks like a nice distortion box but I'm not in the market so I'm going to pass. I do appreciate the offer though.

I haven't run into a Traynor up close and personal. Can you describe what it sounds like and whether there are other brands with a similar sound profile?

@ revroy - I've heard a couple of people on TB describe the tone of the SB500 as being somewhere in between a Gallien Krueger and the Aguilar Tone Hammer. I've owned lots of GK's but have never played through the Tone Hammer. With everything set at noon on the Traynor it is thick and slightly dark sounding, but still clear and articulate (not muddy). I prefer to boost the high mids a little and run the treble somewhere between 2-3. This gets it much closer to that GK sound that I prefer...a little edgy with pronounced highs. The low end is thick and solid, I found myself cutting the low mids a touch. The Low End Expander does a really nice job of shifting the low end frequencies to better match a particular bass or room. After having owned a handful of class D heads I can say that the SB500 sounds closer to the class A/B amps more so than any other head that I've tried. By that I'm saying that the notes have more heft to them and I don't notice any "artificial" tones coming from the amp. I would also add that the SB500 tone is not compressed sounding, it's fairly open and has a touch of coloration to the overall tone...a good thing in my opinion.

I've played a lot of different bass heads and I wouldn't say that there is another amp that sounds just like the Traynor, but I guess they are all similar in that if you EQ it right you can get relatively close to just about any sound. The SB500 does not have any break-up or distortion with the gain all the way up, so you can't emulate any of the tube amps but you can get just about any SS sound out of it.

I'm surprised we don't see more of the Traynor's in the US, I assume this is because their distribution doesn't extend much into the US...none of the major retailers carry Traynor in the US. I'm certain that if the big stores were selling the Traynor Small Block series amps then we'd see a lot more of them because they really do sound good, are made well, and have nice features.

Hope that helps
