The Red Muck is the closest thing to Juan of mars volta & pedal and effects.. Muff.. He's still in coma..

What was the pedal you keep going back too?

I keep going back to the COG Tarkin. It just sounds "big" and bass response is excellent.

Haven't been following Juan's progress recently but his wife posted something in late April that he was making slow progress in rehab. I wish him well.

You get the idea. That said (or inferred?) I honestly don’t know a lot about Fuzz. Until I started down the modular analog synth journey I hadn’t given Fuzz much attention having started out and coming from an R&B/Jazz back round. I’d always pushed an amp for a slightly driven sound, still do although more so with O.D. pedals these days and the types of music much broader.
In researching Fuzz pedals for the synth thing I realized what I’d been missing, and man was I missing out!
I ordered a Hireo BEAD v2 and like the sound of the B:Assmaster and have a 3 Leaf DOOM 2 (I really, really like it but not “unhinged”) so that’s octave Fuzz type circuit correct? The demo (During the intro it shows a Mesa M9, those guys) of the BEAD blew me away but my BEAD is MIA somewhere in the Russian Federation.
I’ll post this elsewhere but I don’t really know the characteristics
and sound of various types of Fuzz, iconic, “inspired by” or new hybrid.
I understand that people may fall into certain camps and subjectivity is one of the things I love most about music, but a succinct overview of different fuzz types, with the above descriptors in mind, would help me target my search including and beyond the fuzz for synth thing.

This add is a perfect example of my ignorance. Control over mids seems imperative and any dirt used on bass needs some method of mitigating low end loss. I guess with some circuits it’s baked in but I don’t know. The people here obviously know what they are talking about and what in particular what they themselves are looking for, or what they find to a caveat. Any thoughts are welcome.

I'm no expert but I will say be prepared to buy and sell lots of fuzz, distortion and OD pedals, especially if you loiter around TB!
Those pedals you mentioned are a good start. You should also look into some form of Green Russian Muff (there are lots) and the smallsound/bigsound tafm. You'll have to try a bunch to find what you like, what your bass likes and what your set-up likes! Pedals that sound great on guitar are sometimes not great on bass (loss of low end), some fuzzes sound better with passive rather than active basses and some fuzzes are fussy about where you put them in your pedal chain. Also some "prefer" batteries over being plugged in. Ha ha! Good luck!

Watch more videos, with headphones or blasting through big speakers. MrExcane does a lot of heavy distortion pedal videos. Zachary Rizer demos all kinds of pedals on bass. Super thorough.

Haha so true! In the post above I referred to the analog synth thing as a “journey”. That was some creative writing (B.S.) right there bro! But I feel better, I’ve been waiting for years for those liberal arts courses to bear some kind of fruit.
Thank you a bunch for your advice man, it’s solid advice.
I’ll make sure to try different basses including the one active bass I have, try different placements within the chain and take a second look at the Muff type circuit, specifically the Green that has attracted low end devotion. Gonna keep my cheap but serviceable IEM’s on hand as well!
