Up for sale is my 1984 Pedulla Interceptor Buzz (INT 0842); yes, a fretless Interceptor… VERY rare bird…I am the second owner of this bass; previous owner purchased directly from Pedulla this bass and a fretted twin (INT 0843). To be honest, when these basses went up for sale on talkbass, I was after the fretted version first, but very grateful to be able to purchase the fretless version…
This bass is a neck-thru, five-piece walnut/maple/walnut constructed bass with a tung oil finish. This bass is 100% stock (with the exception of the strings) with no reported modifications/repairs and comes with the original Pedulla hard shell case. The first thing I noticed about this bass is that it is at least a pound lighter than any MVP/EMS that I have owned (chalking that up to the walnut components of this bass versus the eastern rock maple used with MVPs). The neck is straight and true and the fretboard is smooth, although wear from previous owner is evident… The Bartolini pups/electronics are working perfectly, at most I occasionally have to give the pots a spritz of electronic contact cleaner to fix a scratchy pot or two… Truss Rod has the old “nipple screw” and not the squared screw which requires the Pedulla harp key tool to adjust.
The issue I have with the bass is obvious wear and tear from use by the previous owner; multiple scratches over the body of the bass… discoloration in the finish at the bottom of the bass with the cause as per the previous owner “an old strap that deteriorated while in the case”. There is apparent wear on the fretboard, but nothing to affect the playability of this bass. Can only assume that round wound strings were used by previous owner, although Pedulla recommended the use of nickel round wound strings on his Buzz basses based on the hard coating used on the fretboard. Had this bass professionally setup, with TI Flats installed…Conservatively, I would give this bass a 6.5 out of 10 based on the considerable wear on this bass, not the playability or sound (passive/active). The interior of the case is pretty solid; the outside has a good deal of wear but not from apparent abuse…
My initial intent when I purchased this bass was to have the fretboard recoated and the body/neck sanded, re-stained and sealed…. Unfortunately, I never got around to it and hopefully the new owner will get this done… That’s why I am offering the bass at this price.
I had a couple of Pedulla water seals (Mike graciously sent me a couple black and white water seals back in 87 after two of my MVPs were stolen, recovered and required well needed restoration, but that story is for another time) which I used to have a couple Pedulla to-spec Metallic Gold water seals made, but unfortunately the shop could only make vinyl seals instead of true water seals… Vinyl proofs are included with bass to be used for future restoration; strongly suggest finding a shop which can make water seals in metallic colors.
