What didn’t you like?

To my ears and fingers, when I needed guts, I liked them to be raw guts on the D and G. Out of them all, I loved the Gamut mediums I played for the longest. Currently, all the work I am doing, and my bass, seem to quite like the presence of steels, so I play S42s, and I’m happy with my old Spiro G.
To me, the Oliv sounded nice, but like trying out something lovely that doesn’t feel your own. You know what it’s like, different bass, different ears, different week, different story…and the person who bought it is very happy with it, so it’s all turned out for the best.

absolutely. if the winding gets screwed is it a good plain gut string at the point or ruined? im curious

I’m guessing the Oliv diameter may be a little thin without the wrapping…I’m sure it’ quality gut underneath, just don’t know how usable in a playing situation.

When you remove the high density metal wrap from a G string, the mass drops substantially. So either the tensions drops a lot if used as a plain gut G or the pitch rises up a lot at the same tension as before. I‘m rather guessing that it might work as a high C or D, but that totally depends on the amount of mass removed from the string.
Removing the winding from a historically wound gut string usually gets you a plain gut two positions higher (E->D, A->G), but a modern metal wound gut G might need a certain core size to hold the tension, so the percentage of mass removed might be less than with the historically constructed lower strings.

So your saying the oliv unwrapped might still work as a plain g ... I guess only one way to see!

@DoubleMIDI is saying that an Oliv A with the wrapping removed might make a plain G.

I've tried removing the wrap from a damaged Eudoxa. It's not easy.

As a very low tension G, probably too low to be playable at all.
But there are people using bumped sets putting every string a fourth lower as intended and adding a high C tuned to G. It might even be more extreme than that.
If you want to experiment: tune your existing G to D and decide if you want to play that.

I didn‘t say an Oliv, since it is a more modern design with flatwound streel and I never had one myself. I meant a single layer of (probably silver plated) roundwound copper. The silver wound ones (like Eudoxa) were in use too, but not very frequently because of the high price of silver.
Steel, specially flatwire, can be much thinner than copper without a high risk of breakage, so the weight difference of an unwound Oliv might have less mass difference (in percentage) than an unwound Eudoxa. So the pitch diffence at the same tension might be less than a minor seventh for an unwound Oliv G.
