The worst thing about a fanned fret Dingwall is that you never want to play anything else after that. Seriously. Took me about 2 minutes to adjust and now I don't want to play my 'normal' basses.

It's worth it, but still a lot of scratch to come up with now. Sure it will find a good home. Just wish it was mine.

Same for me , I have owned about 23-24 US and euro Spectors but I'm down to only a few favorites and I'm only looking at Dingwall for new builds now .. onward and upward on the low end ….

Aside from the much better note definition and clarity like Nate already mentioned dingwalls have extremely versatile tone options even in passive mode I would need several Spectors to cover the ground this bass can and I can tell you I definitely don't miss always trying to find the right gauge strings to get even tension on my 35" scale Spectors … Dingwall is really on a whole different level than korg/Spector

so with the fanned fretting the ding wall strings are a constant make and gauge ? i only like the afterburner the combustion and NG and D bird seam cheap maple neck yup maple fretboard yup different pickups that are specific to this bass and there a milion of em for sale why i think people get tired of the tone i m o

I think most people start out with an Asian import just to see if they like the fan fret concept then either upgrade to a Canadian custom or go back to parallel frets if it's not for them … I have owned a combustion and the quality is on par with any Spector euro and better than any Korean Spector I have played ,. They do have carbon fiber rods in the neck and an option for a pauferro fretboard and the nut/fret cutting is all done at the Canadian shop after the initial build is done in Korea so the fretwork is excellent even though they lack the compound radius fretboard that the Canadian models have
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by the Dingwall strings being a constant make and gauge? .. what I meant is the Dingwall gives you even consistent and comfortable tension from string to string with no loose floppy B string or tight stiff D,G strings like when you put a normal medium gauge set on a 35" scale 5 string the tension and timber of the strings gets extremely unbalanced and the multi scale setup fixes all that

I have all 6 string ABZ models...compared to Wick and Spector the Dingwalls weigh considerably less, balance better, have far more articulate note definition, hold their value waaaay better, array of tones you can achieve is staggering, IMO they are easier to play and their necks are so comy and thin. The "snap" of a bolt on is really noticeable too, not saying its better but to my ears it is, your mileage may vary, to each his own. After all the years playing the Warwicks and Spectors, comparing them to a Ding sonically, they sound dead and lifeless, I prefered the Spector tone over the Warwicks and although I'll always have a special place in my heart for them, I'll never own or buy another one again. Again, just me. The market is flooded now with overseas Spectors and the Warwick market has been stagnant for years. I've got burned too many times buying new Wicks then trying to sell them for anywhere near what I paid,, the Spectors did hold their value better and as far as Canadian Dings, they are rarely listed and "usually" sell pretty fast and usually for near new price. SD only makes around 300 a year so the market wont ever be flooded with used ones which is another benefit of buying one. Just my 2 cents.

so the afterburner is the canadian version ??
how do you tell the canadian version? i've heard that ding walls are like thumb basses in that they have a tone that is unique adjustable yes split coils and all but or a selector knob but the sound isn't for country
not for pop just metal i'm just trying to say that for every type of music there's a different bass for that tone cuz i'd like to own one and i appreciate bassists that explain an instrument so well ! is there really one bass that can do it all ??!!! get the precision tone the jazz tone the muddy tone you know what i'm saying??
