This extension came off of a 1906 Hawkes Panormo that I used to own. At one time it had a Stenholm machine attached to it. You can clearly see that it angles back at the top and I don't remember why.

That angle is probably to pull strings back over a nut - the same way your scroll puts an angle on the strings over the nut.
