I have been living in a fairly remote location aptly called "the lost sierras" about an hour from interstate 80 via Truckee Ca or an hour or so from Reno Nv. Pre Covid I was jamming with some locals and we decided to stand down pre vaccination (Played some Reno stuff before that but too far). There were only a few local venue opportunities local and that collaboration has not been revived. I keep seeing this MAS wall of sound being fallow and now in my 70's realize I don't want to move to another great gig location like where I used to use these. So these pics are just a rough preliminary proof that I have these. Original MAS 48 with multiple rear tweeters cost 1400 and is still the bad boy with my Fender 300 Bassman. MAS 66 with mids and tweet sitting on MAS 1 10 sub. (with cover). MAS 28 with a mid. The one Mike made for himself for a one way 2 hand gig walk in, which I did often to small to mid gigs. Cost 799.00 I think. The bad news is I have been unlucky with trying to ship things and always lose money. The only original cartons I have are for the 66 and maybe the sub. I bought the sub from MarkA so you can see what he offered it for. Great guy! Recently had a guy want some motorcycle parts from me so I told him the dimension and weight of the carton and he e-mailed me the shipping label that he paid for. That is the only way I will ship. To be clear, the MAS66 is a fridge killer. Rated at 900cc Vd/900 watts, it moves more air, retains more clarity/articulation, and goes substantially deeper, with a -3db point of 40hz (this is without the 110 sub, which is more for "thickening" than for increased low-end extension).

Thanks 31HZ. I plugged the speakon into the 28 cab and used a meter on the 1/4 plug at the other end of the cable. I got 8 ohm read if I'm doing it right. Cheap bathroom scale says around 40 lbs for the MAS 28. I will research what the cabs have been sold for in the past

Thanks Eric. I will probably be left with the 48 because nobody likes wrestling 70 plus pounds anymore.
My original rambling post may not be clear but I prefer local sale. Willing to drive to Reno or Truckee/North Lake Tahoe. I do have shipping cartons for the sub and 66 but will hold out for local right now.
Sub $300.00 Mas 66 $550.00 and MAS28 500.00

Any disposable income I may have in the near future is already spoken for. :( That said, I'll stay sub'd to this thread as my aunt drives semi cross-country and might be able to grab it, but that's a long shot. I have wanted to try some MAS goodness for years and have an affinity for 8" cabs (but recently got bit by the PJB bug). That 6x6 + sub would be awesome to experience!

That sub was killer under a MAS 46, a Flex top, and an Audiokinesis Hathor 1203 (tilted back on an Ampwedge atop the sub, or stacked vertically).

I found @31HZ's observations on the sub to apply when used with the 46 (I assume similar results could be had with the 66); the sub adds more "thickness" than extension (the 6" speakers, IIRC, actually go a hair lower than the 3010 LF), but I really liked that combo: not only was the sound thicker, but it hit you harder in the chest than the 46 solo -- sub (and the Flex) have a more aggressive note-envelope than the 6"-based cabs did. Flex could be hyper aggressive/punchy for some (not me). The combo of the 46 and sub gave the best of both worlds. I also remember being able to get a super-sexy modern R&B sound (among many others) with it.

Good luck with the sale, @mntngrown -- hope life's treating you all right!

Thanks MarkA! Life is good. Just no playing opportunities w/o driving an hour or more for the smoky bar gigs of Nevada. I am over that. I actually did not know the 66 goes that low so you and 31HZ are helpful. Given that I am a senior citizen, hanging on to a bunch of stuff I am not using makes no sense. I keep my eye on bandmix though:)

Still not willing to ship. people are asking if the sub has a xover/filter . Since I have been running 2 speakons out the Mesa head and the sub gets it's own feed, I think there is a filter or the 3010lf would sound strange?

Re the cosmetics of the sub:
So I went out to take detailed pics and saw it was not pristine. The front grille had some spots which I saw when I took delivery of it, but thought were just a little spill or something. On closer inspection it was a little rust. I took it off and wire brushed it and did a couple coats of indoor outdoor rustoleum type gloss paint. Then I saw a couple small dings in the Duratex so I touched those up as I have a viable 1/2 gallon of Duratex from my Fearful build project. After I put it back together I will post pics.

There is some low-passing going on with the sub, to (among other things) tame a midrange peak or two in the 3010LF's frequency response. I remember talking with Mike about this and him saying that peak (or those peaks) could be useful in some circumstances and that it might be fun to try the 3010LF run full-range, but that's not the case with this sub (and I don't know if he ever built any like that).

The low passing is pretty gradual (unlike with most subs). I don't know the slope, but it's still contributing some appreciable content around 500 Hz or so. Normally, you wouldn't want that degree of overlap with whatever bass cab you were using on top, but, because of the way the MAS/Big E stuff works, it works with this sub -- it actually enhanced the clarity of my Hathor 1203 out in the house when I used it with that cab, though I should be more specific about my experience with it:
  • This sub was made for use with the Flex (it was originally part of a 210 Flex Mod) and the MAS 46/66. Worked brilliantly with the Flex and the 46 I had, easy-peasy.
  • Because of the voicing of the Hathor1203 and the similarity in power handling and sensitivity, Mike thought that they might pair well together. When I got the Hathor, he suggested I try that combo -- and they did, but I found that positioning of the cabs made a significant difference.
    • Sub horizontal on the floor, Hathor on top = too much upper bass/low mid (guessing reinforcement from coupling) for me.
    • Sub horizontal on the floor, Hathor on top, tilted up with an Ampwedge = good.
    • Sub and Hathor stacked vertically = good.
    • I usually had the port plugged on the Hathor, but sometimes I ran it open, too.
On at least one occasion, I ran the Hathor and sub, each off its own side of a poweramp -- found it useful to tweak the volume of the sub that way, but found that I liked it at or within a click of equal power to both cabs, anyway. Fiddled at home (with a Yamaha PB-1 and Ashley BP-41) with bi-amping the sub/Hathor stack and playing with the crossover point -- neat, but fiddly and never tried that live.

Sub worked with Hathor. I think it could work well with a variety of conventional cabs, but YMMV. Worked brilliantly with the Flex and 46, but seemed to fight my MAS 112 the one time I tried them together at home (though I did read about someone using that combo live).

I don't know if there is any high-passing (for the top cab) or not with this sub. If there is, I think that it, too, is pretty gradual. (This would be one to ask Mike about.)

Mike packaged a 110 sub with a MAS 45, years back -- physically identical to this one, but might have been crossed-over/low-passed differently (you'd have to ask Mike -- not that it pertains to this sub).

Been awhile since I played the sub, but that's the best I can recall. Hope that's more helpful than confusing!

I spoke with Steve Regier (of Big E fame) yesterday and asked about the sub.
  • It is low-passed. There is still some appreciable content at 500 Hz, maybe even a little higher -- though not a lot, I think, since I (of course) messed around with it solo and there's no way I'd ever use it as a stand-alone cab (unless for some super-dubby special effect).
  • There is no high-passing for the top cab.
As mentioned, this is different from most subs (and from what you'd want from most subs). It worked brilliantly, plug-n-play, with my Flex top and with my MAS 46.

Worked great with the Hathor 1203 though, when I set the sub horizontally (its default position) and set the Hathor flat on top of it, I got more upper-bass/lower mid reinforcement than I wanted (not bad or muddy or fighting each other, just more than I wanted). Tilting the Hathor up a bit (reducing coupling) or stacking vertically brought things into better balance (and you could fine-tune the stack with the degree of tilt up).

Something Steve mentioned, that I didn't think to try when I had the sub (but which I now dimly recall reading about in the early days of these cabs), is that you can unplug it and it'll still couple with the top cab and provide a bit of the MVW benefits re. low end and dispersion (contrary to a conventional sub, which'll have a parasitic effect if unplugged -- in which case you can shunt its inputs, but I digress). Might be something to try if you have the sub plugged in and feel it's too much.
