** Details updated + price drop + more pics! **

I've had this one for 12 years now and said I’d never sell it, but it’s really a shame for this to never get played, so I think it’s time for a new home.

If you’re looking for a players bass with killer tone, that's also nearly 100% original, this is it.

Here's the details:
- Update from my local vintage-expert tech: Neck and pots date to 1972/73, serial dates to late-74 or early-75, body features seem most likely 1974 -- so we're gonna call it 74!
- Everything you see on the bass is original except the pots and jack -- the originals were a bit scratchy when I bought the bass, not great in the studio -- so I had them replaced by my tech. Still have the originals, and they're included.
- Mocha (e.g. Walnut) brown Alder body with plenty of mojo.
- Scale says 8.8 lbs, and that feels about right.
- This thing has been well played and has the mojo to show, the neck feels amazing. Tech says the frets look original, they play great with no issues.
- Neck is straight as an arrow, truss rod works fine, tuners work perfectly. Holds up insanely well to climate changes, I toured it for 5 years and never touched the truss rod.
- The tone is nuts. It's got this punchy, live tone that sits so well in a mix -- exactly what you expect from a great P. Used to get loads of compliments from engineers on the tone, and bandmates would actually complain when I'd pull out a different P. Every 70's P is a bit unique, and this one is no exception -- it's very special.
- Comes in a brand-new Gator soft/hard case. If you care about the flimsy 70’s Fender case, I’ve got it in storage somewhere, let's chat about it.

I'm sure I have left something out, so here's some photos and happy to answer any questions!

I owned a 75 mocha P bass with a maple neck, sold it to soon and to cheap.
Picked up a 2008 Fender Custom shop 59 NOS, it’s a great bass as well.
It helped ease the sellers remorse pain.

Very nice example I also own a P bass with '72 dated maple neck and late '73 pot dates. My neckplate serial is a bit lower than yours. Who knows when it left the factory, possibly 1974? I figure they probably made a few maple P necks in '72 which took a while to use up. Rosewood was pretty popular then. Good luck with the sale, it looks really nice.

Full transparency: updated details based on feedback from a local vintage expert I trust -- seems it's most likely a 1974 when considering all the features.

That is a funk machine if Ive seen one. That is a forever bass. If your hands still work and you still play bass, I would never sell.

Sounds right, that’s almost exactly the same thing I was just told by a local expert on vintage Fenders, seems they just grabbed stuff from bins and assembled it without too much thought back then!

Is that why they cost north of 5k starting out for something playable, if some one vomited on it and put it back in the case 50 some years ago?

Maybe if you buy something minty from a vintage shop… if these actually-played early-70’s are going for $5k, I need to update my price

But yes, the vast majority of Fenders sold 50 years ago are not still around in un-modified and playable condition. Thus the cost, like anything else with demand and low supply.

Anyway, bump!
