This is a light 1976 Precision in three tone sunburst, mostly original and with a few extras. It's a fantastic player, and ticks all the 'vintage P' boxes. Asking $3100 USD shipped to continental US, or $3650 CAD shipped within Canada. Neck is maple, so no CITES or other border nonsense.
Here's the key points:
- Neck is straight, no humps, and truss rod works
- Some fret wear, but plays beautifully with no buzz and good intonation
- Fender spec setup currently (my preference), action could go lower if desired (had 4/64" for a while)
- Weight is fantastic, 8.6 lbs on a luggage scale (feels lighter)
- Pickups are back to original grey bobbins, though it had DiMarzio Model P PAF units when I bought it (originals were in the case, DiMarzios will be included with sale)
- Includes OHSC in very good condition
- Includes original pickup and bridge covers
- All hardware original except pots and pickguard
- Typical wear for a player of its age, including some buckle rash on the back and a few dents and chips
- Wear on back shows finish is nice and thin; no goopy late-'70s poly finish
- More (newer) photos to follow, can take closeup of anything you like
The serial number (610xxx) and pickup stamps indicate 1976, so that's my assumption for dating. The serial is stamped on the neck plate, not the headstock, so my guess is it's an early '76 example before they made that switch, possibly with a '74or '75 neck. The pots have been replaced, and the neck stamp is inconclusive, but everything else is correct for early '76 or earlier. Other than the pots, the pickguard doesn't have holes for the cover or the thumb rest, so it can't be original either.
I got it at Long & McQuade in Vancouver about six years ago (here's the NBD thread: NBD - 1976 Precision in 3TS ), and it has since made the move with me to Ontario. I was told it was a single-owner bass by Jean, the Bass Dept manager there. With me, it was an occasional player in a very gentle worship setting for a while, but has otherwise been kept at home and only played occasionally to make sure the setup is good. I did put flatwounds on for a bit and the neck handled them fine, but I went back to the .105 rounds on now. I'm playing a lot less than I was, and this is too nice a player to sit around gathering dust...
