Up for grabs today is my relatively recently acquired Tech21 SansAmp Dug DP-3X preamp. After cycling through countless distortion and overdrive pedals looking for that perfect direct-only (ampless) pedalboard distortion sound, I finally found it in the Dug. Seriously, it is absolutely perfect. It's a bi-amped setup in a box. The lows are thunderous while the highs are distorted, helping you cut through the mix just like good old Dug himself. But it really can be a lot more flexible than that. The controls are very powerful (and very tiny), and highly interactive. Scoop the mids for the mid-scooped, metal clank, or crank the mids and the "chunk" knob, and flip (well, depress) the "shift" switch to get a cutting upper-mid grind that will make you stand out in a mix. And with built-in compression, a tuner, and a speaker-simmed XLR out, you really could conceivably show up with just this at a gig and come out perfectly fine. If it's good enough for Dug, who does that very thing, then who am I to argue? It's even got a headphone output (or, more accurately, a switch that turns the 1/4" output into a headphone output) for silent practice.
However, I find myself going through a bit of a Billy Sheehan phase these days. I recently picked up a ginormous Suncoast BC3xl that takes up about 1/3 of my pedalboard, so not everything will fit anymore. And it meets my grindy needs just fine for the time being. You can get Sheehan-ish out of the Dug by cranking the mids and chunk, but the Suncoast with a Rolls crossover in front is just ever-so-slightly-more-Sheehan-ish. So I can pass the Dug on to someone else and hopefully end your search for that warm, cutting, powerful, distorted bass tone you've been chasing in your head like I had been for years.
And seriously. The pedal and corresponding knobs are deceptively tiny. I cannot believe how much power they packed into this little puppy. And it's analogue?! And the knobs light up like Christmas?! Fugghedaboudit!
